Terminal Alliance would work for that. Also Zoe's Tale, but that's in the middle of a series.

Greg | 1465 comments Hey Wayland, when you get a chance, maybe star the two Royalty vs. Commoner threads as "important" and remove the star from the older Milestone vs Ultraverse threads? That way, the Royalty vs Commoner threads move further toward the top and I can find them easier. Thanks!!

I've been trying to tinker with that and make it happen, but thus far it is resistant to the concept.

Greg | 1465 comments Ah, thanks Wayland. I guess maybe there's a bug in changing threads now? In the past for threads I'd created, I would: 1. click on the thread, 2. click on the little text "(edit)" next to the thread title once I was in it, 3. then click on the "mark this topic as important" box, then 4. click on the save button. Or to reverse it do the same except uncheck the box. But maybe Goodreads has a bug where that's not working properly? I did notice bugs with some other random things over the past months.

No big deal really, I can just scroll down. I was being lazy. :)

It looks fine to me -- this year's challenge threads are starred and the rest aren't.

It looks good now for me too. If someone fixed it, thanks! Or maybe I'm just losing it and thought the wrong ones were starred - if so, sorry about that!

I think my changes finally took. Not sure what the delay was about.

Maybe some weird software bug? Either way, glad it worked. A boon for all of us lazy scrollers!

Way to go, Audrey! Nice shortcut.

Ophelia Gunn (opheliagunn) | 78 comments Help meeee! Anyone have any recs for:

Black Lightning
1. Olympic Athlete- read a book where a major character is a professional athlete of any kind, where someone gets famous from something having to do with sports, or with any kind of sports champion on the cover.

The Thing
2. Football Scholarship- read a book where sports are a big part of a major character’s life, where someone’s life is changed by sports, or with anything sports related on the cover.

I despise sports irl, so anything contemporary is out of the question. I'd rather stick forks in my eyes. Does anyone have any SFF recs that fit these, pretty please? :D

message 31: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 553 comments Race the Sands might work, its a stand alone I really enjoyed. Its about monster racing and the main character is a professional monster racer, that would count as a sport I think.

I read a kid's book, Camp Average: Double Foul for #2. It was short. For Olympic athlete, I was thinking of going nonfiction, like The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. I too do not like sports IRL!

Kings of the Wyld could count -- it has an arena challenge. I would clear it with Wayland first.

Karina (darrow24) | 66 comments The Proposal would probably work at least for #2. There's a baseball and what looks like a baseball player on the cover. The main character's life changes during a baseball game.

message 36: by Shawnie (new)

Shawnie | 3239 comments Mod
Quidditch is a sport at Hogwarts. Harry Potter fan?

Anything with arenas and gladiators is considered a sport. There are quite a few fantasy novels with gladiator type characters. My favorite so far is the Kill the Queen series by Jennifer Estep. The society is based on gladiator traditions which is a sport.

The Bromance Book Club series is about pro baseball players, but the sports is barely in it. More of a cozy romance, which I enjoy about as much as sports.

message 39: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1561 comments Ivon is a science fiction set in a future where professional sports players feature heavily and I think would cover either prompt. I read it for a sports-related prompt in one of the previous years' challenges.

Ophelia Gunn (opheliagunn) | 78 comments Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Appreciate it. After some thought I'm probably going with the below, in case it helps anyone else :)

For Black Lightning I'm hoping The Combat Codes will count. Not out yet (was indie but since been picked up by Orbit I believe) but I can wait as I want to read this one anyway.

I think I'm going to try The Queen's Gambit for the The Thing prompt. It's contemporary but I loved the TV series so I'm willing to try the book.

Karina (darrow24) | 66 comments I'm curious what everyone is reading for the new villain. I think I have 1 and 2 prompts covered but I'm having a hard time thinking of what to read for #3 “Talks like Jayne Seymour, fights like Bruce Lee”.

message 42: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1465 comments I'm doing one that isn't fantasy/SF; It's Greek mythology reimagined: The Silence of the Girls (Pat Barker) with skilled fighter (Achilles) on cover

Beartown by Fredrik Backman would also work for the sports categories. Haven't read them myself but I've heard good things.

Hi, Kate! Unfortunately, this is one of the rules:

-For a book to count, it should have at least 100 pages. Graphic Novels do not count for the challenge.
