I have no idea why this book is marketed as ‘young adult’. The reading level is not difficult. I’d have no qualms about using it with middle grade students. Students over the age of its 14 year old protagonist would probably find it too juvenile.

Juvenile, but with plenty of humor that any age group could appreciate. Fourteen year old Mona is a wizard of small talent. She’s good with bread and other baked goods. A series of very unfortunate events forces her into the unlikely job of leading the defense of her city with animated, giant cookies. It’s a familiar trope of incompetent adults creating a mess that the kids step in to solve, with magic. A fun story with a female protagonist who overcomes her limitations and fears to save the day.
