A book where the family dynamic is less than ideal. This is horror so we know that can vary from the uncomfortable to horrific.

Laura Sanner | 15 comments I would like to nominate Motherthing! I just finished it and this book is full of dysfunction! I would rate it back of the fridge.

Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth

Jamie | 41 comments Possibly The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks, or We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson

Louise (louvits) | 18 comments Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey. When your father is a serial killer, I'd call that dysfunction.
I've never had a physical reaction to a book until I read this one. It's so viscous with bodily fluids I thought I would be sick.
That said, I love this book. It is so freezer worthy it deserves to be under a box of forgotten Otter Pops and frozen peas.

Ashleigh Florida (ashleighmaria) | 2 comments Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison would fit this category.

Brenda Hudson | 4 comments A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. Great story with tragic family dynamics.

Whitney | 118 comments What Moves the Dead. A popular pick for the retelling category, but the Usher's definitely qualify as dysfunctional.

Darcy | 17 comments I didn't intend it, but the first book I read in 2023 was The Deep by Nick Cutter, and I'd say that brother relationship fit the bill pretty well!

Jamie Zaccaria | 19 comments I read She Is a Haunting by Trang Thanh Tran and gave it 5 stars.

This book was SO GOOD. The language was delicious without being too much, the setting was brilliant, and the author does such a good job of writing real people. I can't say enough good things about this queer haunting tale.
