To be included per GR policy. It is the identifier (like ISBN) for Kindle Editions and Audible Audio Editions. It more specifically identifies a particular edition. They are even expanding their use I believe.
Example: I was trying to add audiobooks to a list, a list about Audibe so any other edition would not be correct one to add, and could not pull them up in search because the ASIN were not added. The default search results kept pulling ebooks or physical copies.

No.
I was searching for particular version via the ASIN so other editions would not come up.
The ASIN will also more correctly designate so duplicates won't be added.
I use to be a GR librarian back in the day before Amazon bought Goodreads, we even used them back then.

on amazon it says "Author’s Note: This is the second edition of this book. The story has been re-published with a new cover and some additional editing, but it brings nothing new to the readers who have already purchased or read it!"
is it possible to link the two editions?

Let me look into this one Katja, the book has 2 unique ASIN numbers so I want to double check the rules on if they should be combined, most books that are marked as "second editions" are not but they are also mostly academic books. I will get back with you once I confirm the rules about this one. :-)

The author's name should also be corrected to J.T. Hunt on all :( per GR policy. There is another author by the same name, by the way, so will need to be edited accordingly.
Isn't OP just asking to combine (as in different publications of the same book, multiple editions) not merging?

Hi Nicole, thanks for the message, it reminded me to come back and check. I recently got an email with some new updates on how to proceed with changes to books and I could have sworn something about combining books with updated editions was in there but it was something else related to combining books, not the same as what needed to be done for JT Hunt. I have to leave that name spelled as it is because that is how it is listed on Amazon and all the other sites. Do you know if they are on GR? I haven't seen them do anything with their author page, not even take control of it, so I am guessing not. If he/she is please let me know and I can ask if they want their name changed.
Thanks again!

Ok, manual still contains policy for initialed names.

Yes, the rules on GR about author names that are initials are that they need the periods. However, I can't get a clear answer on if there is an exception to when the author specifically chooses not to do that, meaning it is displayed on the cover and seller sites as being initials that do not contain the periods. I kinda have a pet peeve about this, I prefer that the initials should match how the authors choose to have them. Because of this I don't add books where the author does not use the periods in the initials and I don't change names to use initials with periods. I won't go against the rules of GR but I also want to respect the authors preference so I just leave it as is and let other librarians change it if they so choose. I have been able to reach an author once or twice and asked if I could change it to match GR rules but that is the only time I make those changes, once the author tells me it's okay. So here because I don't know the author to ask about it and I can't get a clear yes/no about an exception I just leave them as is and don't add new ones that don't conform. I know some probably thinks it such a small thing but for some reason it just annoys me, like fingernails on a chalkboard....lol So I just stay away from those as a way to not go against GR but still respect the author's preference for their name. Does that make any sense? I just don't want you to think I am ignoring a request for a change. :-)

I understand. I too think it should match the cover, same as title is suppose to match cover (not added stuff on Amazon). But I understand also that they need uniformity. I’ve seen authors try to convince them otherwise. Goodreads knows that they’re going against the authors preference, but they would be no matter what when seeking uniformity - one side would always be unhappy.

Yeah, I am not sure I will keep using GR next year. I really don't like the new format and some of the ways they do things, like having to add spaces between names. It seems that they should have a better way of differentiating authors with the same name rather than just add multiple spaces.
I've got a really good Excel spreadsheet that allows me to add and use those features that I like most. I can see charts that let me see which different genres I read, percentage of books read compared to my TBR, and lots of others. GR has really become just a place to see reviews but I don't need to be an active member to see those.
I hope they make some better changes this year....just not holding out....lol

Got it fixed!
This Second Librarian Help Discussion is for a specific working list.
Here are the sorts of changes Danielle would like put on this second list:
"... just for adding page counts, narrators, illustrators, the minor things. I have noticed quite a few books are missing this information. I won't reply to those requests but having a running list that I can go in and fix as needed would be awesome. It makes it easier for members to get an accurate count of pages read for the year and to find other books by narrators and illustrators that they like. "
