Both of these are on my want to read shelf, so I'm leaning this way at the moment, even though Langston Hughes is one of my favourite 20th century poets. Not that I sit and read books of poetry, but I've read a fair bit of his poetry. Also, Florence B. Price used his poems in some of her art songs. They were contemporaries and when she and her then husband fled to Chicago they became friends as I recall. I do know they worked together, etc. It's been a while since I read her biography.
Hey Karin,
In one of my other groups someone posted a link to a list of 50 books Black people should read and these books were on there. A lot of the books on the list that I want to read has been done by this group already so I'll just read them on my own.
I don't believe I've heard of Florence Price, I'm going to look into her.

Yea when the poll came out I was for sure choosing Hughes but since I've submitted three, I don't know what my choice will be now. LOL

I'm sure white people can benefit from reading them as well.
The biggest learning for me in recent years has been in just how many racist things still go on in day to day lives of people of colour in the US (in Canada you get more "smiling racists"). I realized that there were still racists, but not how much of it was still so open. Also, I hadn't realized that it was against the law for blacks to get mortgages, etc (I think it was FDR who signed that one, but it might have been Teddy--I'm quite sure it was a Roosevelt), plus legislation about race zoning which led to an increase in black poverty and opportunities which led to increased housing segregation.
The other thing has had me reeling what went on in the Indian Residential School that was on the local reserve. I had no idea--it wasn't talked about and most of the First Nations' kids in my class didn't live in it, but with their families on the reserve (back then they just walked to the school as everyone elsebecause it was before Canada had granted them sovereignty. Well, I took a bus, but they lived right next to the village.)

If not, I have a suggestion for the poll.
