Iconic Trail: The Via Dinarica
4 Months from Start

Patrizia has an exciting trio of trails for us to explore!


The Via Dinarica is a project that was launched in 2010 to promote tourism in the
Balkan region. It includes three different trails that cross Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania. Given the troubled history of the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, we can consider this as a "road of peace" or something very similar.

✱ The White Trail is the main trail in this project and is the only one finished.
✱ The Blue Trail follows the coast of the Adriatic Sea.
✱ The Green Trail is the innermost of the three trails.
✱ Being a very recent trail and still being perfected, look for an updated map of the route before leaving.
✱ There are also variants that can be traveled by bicycle or, even better, by mountain bike.

Tasks

1. The Via Dinarica

The route takes its name from the Dinaric Alps, a mountain range that runs parallel to the coast of the Balkan peninsula. Despite the name, they have no connection with the nearby Alps, which crown the Italian peninsula. The Dinaric Alps are very indented and generally sparsely populated, although they were the refuge of many populations during times of war, especially the Illyrians while the Roman Empire proceeded to conquer the Balkan peninsula.

2. The White Trail

As mentioned, the first of the three trails to be completed was the White Trail. About 1261 km (783 mi) long, it largely follows the ridge of the Dinaric Alps mountain range. During this route, the highest peaks of the various countries crossed are faced. The trail begins at Mount Nanos (Nanos plateau) in the Slovenian Karst and ends in the Valbona Valley National Park, in the northern tip of Albania. The route may vary according to the tourist guides and weather conditions.

3. The White Trail: the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

Right at the start of the journey, the trail takes you past the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. The caves, extending for 21 km (13 mi) are the most visited in Europe. They are full of stalagmites and stalactites and can only be visited accompanied by a guide. Not far from Postojna stands the Castle of Predjama, built inside a karst cave and considered impregnable. Although it was destroyed in the fifteenth century after its lord, the Baron Erasmus of Lueg, had rebelled against the emperor. It was later rebuilt in the Renaissance style and now attracts visitors from all over the world.

4. The White Trail: Valbona Valley National Park

While on the White Trail, several very interesting areas and some national parks are crossed, but I want to tell you about the one where you will end your journey: the Valbona Valley National Park in Albania. The park owes its name to the river that crosses it, where it is possible to admire the river otters. But it is above all known for its Ancient Primordial European Beech Woods. These ancient woods found throughout Europe became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2007 and those in this park were added ten years later in 2017. The park was only created in 1996 and is one of the main tourist attractions of this nation, though it is little known among tourists around the world.

5. The Blue Trail

The Blue trail starts in Koper, Slovenia and ends in Albania near Shkodër. Much of its route takes place along the Croatian coast and it is possible to visit four of the most picturesque islands (Krk, Rab, Pag and Mljet) as well as three national parks (Paklenica, Krka and Mljet) and other nature reserves. Generally speaking, this route is not particularly difficult and almost everything can be tackled by bicycle if you wish.

6. The Blue Trail: Krka National Park

The Blue Trail sometimes diverts its route towards the interior of Croatia and one of these detours leads to Krka National Park. The park takes its name from the river that crosses it and is known for several spectacular waterfalls. But you can also visit two monasteries, the ruins of several fortresses built to defend themselves from the Turks, and there are even remains of a Roman site.

7. The Blue Trail: Dubrovnik

Along the coast you will find several inhabited centers, but the one that definitely deserves a visit is Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic". The city was an independent maritime republic from 1358 to 1808, although it reached its peak between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its historic center, rich in artistic and cultural monuments, has been a World Heritage Site since 1979. The city was also known by the Latin name of Ragusa (Republic of Ragusa) until 1808.

8. The Green Trail

The Green Trail is the easternmost of the Via Dinarica routes and is still under construction, although many hikers have already walked possible routes, using the available paths and roads. It owes its name to the fact that it largely passes through coniferous forests and, generally speaking, it unwinds along the lower mountains of the Dinaric Alps.

9. The Green Trail: Plitvice Lakes National Park

Being still under construction, it is impossible to know for sure where this route will pass, but it seems almost certain that one of its stops will be the Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia. It is the first national park established in Croatia and has been a UNESCO site since 1979. The park is known for its 16 lakes, joined together by many waterfalls, and can now be visited easily after being de-mined after the end of the Croatian war for independence.

10. The Green Trail: Sarajevo

A large part of the green route should take place in Bosnia-Herzegovina and will almost certainly touch its capital, Sarajevo. The city is still remembered by many for the long siege it suffered during the war that followed the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The reconstruction of the city has placed culture at the center of its development strategies. Sarajevo has almost always been known as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious city, as evidenced by the fact that among the monuments to visit there are mosques, synagogues and churches (Orthodox and Catholic).

While on the White Trail, several very interesting areas and some national parks are crossed, but I want to tell you about the one where you will end your journey: the Valbona Valley National Park in Albania. The park owes its name to the river that crosses it, where it is possible to admire the river otters. But it is above all known for its Ancient Primordial European Beech Woods. These ancient woods found throughout Europe became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2007 and those in this park were added ten years later in 2017. The park was only created in 1996 and is one of the main tourist attractions of this nation, though it is little known among tourists around the world.

Along the coast you will find several inhabited centers, but the one that definitely deserves a visit is Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic". The city was an independent maritime republic from 1358 to 1808, although it reached its peak between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its historic center, rich in artistic and cultural monuments, has been a World Heritage Site since 1979. The city was also known by the Latin name of Ragusa (Republic of Ragusa) until 1808.

The Green Trail is the easternmost of the Via Dinarica routes and is still under construction, although many hikers have already walked possible routes, using the available paths and roads.
