Cheryl (cherylllr) What else do you read? What other genres or sub-genres do you prefer, or do you read widely? Are there any that you avoid?

Cheryl (cherylllr) I prefer 'hard' science fiction, the kind that has some astronomy or physics or biology in it. I'm not as much interested in the sociology itself for it's own sake, but more as part of the answer to the What If question that I prefer my SF to have.

For example I love the Wayfarer's series by Becky Chambers not just because it's 'hopepunk' but also because it's What If humans were in space, but as relatively minor and even looked down upon race. What If there were all these other cool kinds of people out there working & fighting together, and humans were trying to find their place among them?

I especially like explorations of sapience and 'peoplehood' -- so, yes, aliens and also AI: I, Robot, Today I Am Carey, etc.

Another favorite SF series is kinda similar, in a way. Humans are finding their place among others in the League of Peoples series by James Alan Gardner.

(I don't like long series. These are longer than trilogies, but they would make lovely self-contained box sets. ;)

I don't like dystopias, political intrigue, "dark" etc.

I do have trouble finding SF that I really like. Fortunately I also like children's books of most genres, and literary fiction, an occasional story in most other genres. And I read a lot of Science Non-Fiction.

Recommendations welcome. New friends who read similarly welcome, too. :)

Glynn | 342 comments I read all kinds of stuff. The only thing I'm not thrilled about reading are romance novels. I like a lot of non-fiction (science, history, etc.) and I am a fan of Sci-Fi as well as mystery. Currently reading Marple: Twelve New Mysteries, which is a collection of stories about Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, written by other writers.

Cheryl (cherylllr) That actually looks like fun. If I need something 'mystery' for a challenge, I'll have to take a look at it.

My mother has recently started reading Westerns of all things. I was surprised to learn how big a fan she was of Jack Reacher, and now she's moved on to another genre I've read almost nothing of. So, good advice for us - a good book is a good book!

(Not that I'm saying go read some Romance. Just saying that I'm glad to learn from all of you what else to try. ;)

I am pretty open to reading a lot of things, but I don't like crime stories that are too grisly or graphic, and I have a hard time getting through incredibly dense non-fiction books, although I love history, and with the right subject I'll stick in there.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments I am drawn to historical fiction and biographies. Avoid heavy science laden books, and anything with battle scenes

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments I have a wide range of books I enjoy including Cozy Murder mysteries, general mysteries, historical fiction, sci fi/fantasy, YA fantasy and non-graphic thrillers. I do not care for horror or anything with graphic violence and/or sex.

Pat of Rocks | 70 comments I am a SciFi guy, with a preference towards hard science fiction. Last year I read The Three Body Problem series - one of the most challenging and rewarding series I've ever read!

I enjoy a good mix throughout the year though to keep things interesting. I was gifted a hand-me-down set of James Bond paperbacks and have been making my way through that series lately. I also read a few history (mainly WWII) and tech books as well.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Wow, what diverse interests we all have! Thanks for the input. I'll try to make sure our Books of the Month appeal to at least some of us at least some of the time! :)

Steven Burt | 25 comments I enjoy vintage crime, like Ross MacDonald and Raymond Chandler. I also read everything that comes out by Charles Cumming, a British author who writes spy novels (and the screenplay and story for the movie, The Plane.) I am inclined to like other stories with a mysterious or even paranormal bent, including time travel.

Amy Bea | 17 comments I mostly read Fiction, Historical Fiction and of course time travel.
I do read some nonfiction if it's informative and not too technical. The Nightingale is one of my favorites of all time. I also enjoy some not too gory Gothic scary books. The Haunting of Hill House is my favorite in this area. I guess I'm an eclectic fiction reader. I do love the classics as well.
Thanks for asking!

Cheryl (cherylllr) I love that so many of read from so many genres. I know people who are less interested in anything other than their favorites, and I feel that sad for them on what they're missing out on.
