The book club gives Gavin an historical romance book to read, guiding him how to relate to Thea differently in order to stave off the divorce she’s seeking. What did those passages actually do for him as opposed to what he was doing before the book?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments They showed him a totally different culture, which was almost
unrelatable when Gavin first started reading the book. He certainly did not devour the novel in one sitting....

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I had a different take. The sports world puts the man in an alpha, archaic role. Gavin had many of the negative qualities of the Earl. They were both in the dark or refused to recognize the derogatory comments made about their wives by the women of their peers. They both messed up in their relationships because they couldn't admit their mistakes.

Once Gavin opened his mind to Courting the Countess , he saw the similarities and started to work on his marriage.

I agree, Sharon. Though Gavin wanted to make things right with Thea, he was losing his patience with her regularly as he kept seeing himself as the injured party and went on the defensive. It wasn’t until he started listening to her, paying attention to her reactions that things started to shift. He began to actively listen.

Charlene, that was part of Gavin’s problem, not being able to see beyond the obvious. At the end, he finally got the human nature aspect of the story, that time and place were irrelevant.
