Hi. I'm feeling a little bit disconnected from my culture so if you have ya books by african-american or asian authors that would be amazing.

Helene (hlbickford) | 8 comments Hi, have you read "The New Kid" by Jerry Craft?

It's a well done graphic novel and won the Newbery Award. It has the classic issues of fitting in, making friends, helping others, bullying, race, socio-economics, conflicts with parents, other kids, etc. I gave it 4 stars.

Binti series or Akata Witch series by Nnedi Okorafor
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Shakera | 2 comments I love reading YA and picture books are my happy place. I would recommend the fantasy series The Gilded Ones (Book 1) and The Merciless (Book 2). It has a couple of social issues in there. Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by Tọlá Okogwu is a fun read that mixes is Nigerian culture and folklore with superheroism to give middle schoolers a nice read about identity and self-acceptance. There is supposed to be a film adapation of this one. The book that I am reading now is Imposter Syndrome and other confessions of Alejanda Kim by Patricia Park. I haven't really dived into it because I am reading some other books but the first chapter is good.
