A book that started out as fan fiction. I’ve always thought fan fiction began as an amateur writer, using established characters and plots to further their own version of the story. I know 50 SHADES OF GREY began as TWILIGHT fan fiction. What I’m seeing on the Listopia suggestions are works by mainly established authors brushing up against another work. Did I mis-identify what fan fiction is? Frankly, I’d rather stick with bonafide writers, outside, of course, of finding a really compelling backstory for Regulus Black. I know there are no Popsugar police to lock me away if I mis-identify a prompt, but I’d like to do my best to authenticate each choice.
The other one is, A book written for NaNoWriMo. Where are the books on the Listopia list being authenticated? Is there a database where authors log the titles they used November for?
Thank you, if you can help me with these.

NaNoWriMo's site used to have a list of authors and their works that were started during the challenge, but that seems to have gone missing. But here are a few articles and libguides that list some books that got their start during NaNoWriMo:

You did NOT misunderstand what "fanfiction" is. What happened is that a lot of members decided to stretch the definition of "fanfiction" to include any book that was based on another book. It's up to each of us how we want to define that and tackle that one, and Listopias are notoriously unreliable since they are an amalgam of EVERYONE'S interpretations all in one list.
