Bernie | 7 comments My wife read this book in the 90s a lot, but can't remember the title. Two sisters went to visit their eccentric family. The family would tell a bunch of stories. The one that sticks out the most is that the girls didn't want to eat green beans, but the grandmother really made the girls want to eat them with how she made them.

Thanks for your help!

Rainbowheart | 28553 comments Does she remember anything about the setting?

Green beans make me think of the American South.

Were the girls staying with their grandparents? Did other relatives live there, too?

Bernie | 7 comments Unfortunately, she can't remember much else. She seems to remember that they were staying with extended family, and included grandparents. She thinks that there were multiple stories that were told throughout the book.

Bernie | 7 comments Unfortunately, no. But great suggestions - thank you!

Capn | 3506 comments Bernie, can she remember anything about the cover? Or where she got the book from (Scholastic book fair, public library, in the classroom, etc.)?

What about the girls - hair colour? Names (even partial recollections?). Any other impressions, however vague? (You'd be surprised how helpful they can sometimes be!).

Rainbowheart | 28553 comments Also, is she positive they were both girls? I'm finding a lot of books with a brother and sister, but not as many with two sisters.

Capn | 3506 comments I did find a book on sisters, but when I searched on OpenLibrary, no 'green beans':

Stories from the Big Chair
Stories from the Big Chair by Ruth Wallace-Brodeur

(mentioning it just in case it looks familiar, but more of a title to rule out, I suppose)

Ah, what about Hey World, Here I Am!?
Hey World, Here I Am! by Jean Little
(Increasingly likely if your wife is Canadian - it's by Jean Little).

..but parsnips. And her Grandmother didn't assist. :S
Nevermind.

Bernie | 7 comments Great suggestions everyone, but she is really zoning out on any other details. Definitely 2 sisters, though. And she's not Canadian :)

Doesn’t match your description exactly - aunt visits (babysits) two sisters and younger brother - however, the aunt is eccentric and tells the children stories, and the third chapter centers around green beans.

Bernie | 7 comments Mdt, that's it! Thank you, my wife is so happy. And thanks to everyone who helped out!

Rainbowheart | 28553 comments Oh, awesome! Good find, mdt.

Glad this is solved. :)
