5.4 - Mythical Monsters

In 1933 the legend of the Loch Ness Monster was born. The first sighting was in April but it the story didn't take flight until after the second sighting. A local couple claimed to have seen "an enormous animal rolling and plunging on the surface." The mythical creature became a media phenomenon with London newspapers. Throughout history there have been many expeditions sent to locate and capture this creature. To this day the Loch Ness Monster remains legend.

Read a book with a mythical creature from the following list. The creature needs to be integral to the story and should be evident on the book's main page.

Required: State the creature

NancyJ (nancyjjj) Does anyone have book recommendations?

I recommend Circe by Madeline Miller. I remember the Minotaur, and perhaps others.

I am not sure what kind of books you like but you can check out the reading plans thread. That might give you some ideas. :)

Robin P | 1610 comments I have both The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock and The Mermaid's Sister so will probably go with one of them. I have been intrigued for a while with this title - The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break.

I am hoping to use The Cottingley Secret - fairies are integral to the story ... whether they were/are real is still being debated!

Approved.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) Do the creatures actually have to be magical or paranormal?

Would either of these books about mermaids work?
The Mermaid from Jeju
Breathe and Count Back from Ten

yes the book does need to feature a mythical creature.
it doesn't look like either of these actually feature a mermaid.

Cat (cat_uk) | 3382 comments I assume that if a book is tagged shapeshifter or vampire that's okay proof?
Thinking of Magic Tides, which features werewolves, lion shifter, vampires, minotaurs and mermen, but not explicitly mentioned in the blurb, though does have vampire and shapeshifter mpg....

Hope that's enough!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments Will this one work? The metadata references: A precocious girl on the cusp of womanhood, Maureen has a head full of dreams, a heart open to romance, and something more: a gift for seeing beyond the ordinary into the mystic realm of fairies, spirits, and even the dreaded Banshee, whose terrifying wail she first hears on a snowy night in 1922

NancyJ (nancyjjj) I just read Elatsoe. The MC's best friend is Fae. He plays a major role throughout the book. (view spoiler)

From NPR: "Set in a version of our contemporary world where everyone knows ghosts, fairies, and vampires are real." The MC's best friend is "Jay a descendent of Oberon." https://www.npr.org/2020/09/05/909802...

Does this work? Is this enough information?

Just want to query Biomega, Vol. 3: the blurb describes "zombie-like drones" (i.e. humans affected by a virus) and seems to pretty clearly be spinning the setting as a zombie apocalypse type thing. It's a pretty common modern zombie trope, so is that good enough, or does it have to be a traditional folk tale case of "these things are walking corpses"?

I'm probably overthinking this, but being so close to the end of the challenge I want to make extra sure I've got it right!

approved for mythical creature, include the reference when you post. its also listed as middle grade so you will need to make sure its meets with the ARbookfinder requirements
