“Imagine yourself in a perfect world. Your mood is positive. Your brain is operating at maximum efficiency. Your body feels healthy, energetic and agile. You have enough time to complete all the tasks at hand and still enjoy the company of family and friends. Every one of your goals is attainable.

In this wonderful land of your imagination, you enjoy a well-balanced diet, get enough exercise, breathe clean air and spend quality time with friends and family. What you aren’t doing is walking around tired, right?”

This is a short science based book cheerfully read to you by the author, a Harvard educated psychologist. It covers the history of known human sleep patterns and personal stories topically focused. I’ve been listening for half an hour and have enjoyed every minute! The ebook is also available on Scribd.

I've listened to the introduction (about the 30 minute mark) and so far enjoying it a lot - I love when authors like this narrate their own work, the enthusiasm always makes it through.

I will say that Spain, Latin America and the Middle East would like a word on how napping can be adopted by a larger society - but hopefully we'll get to that (is siesta different?).

Great find, Lena!

Have been thoroughly into a series reread recently, which has led to neglecting some of my group reads - but I did finish chapter 1, which almost immediately dealt with my question about siesta. I had no idea only 7% of city-dwellers regularly took one!

From my time in Abu Dhabi though, the practice is at least still widespread there, at least where I was - everyone working in the street stalls and shops would disappear for an hour or two in the hottest part of the day, frequently using their wagons as shade. But it's just too hot for anything else!

I’m around 20% in. The military stats on friendly fire related deaths from fatigue are horrifying.

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) Omg. I've started this. I'm in the Asleep on the Job chapter and it mentioned accidents while driving. I had a friend, just a few years older than me (i'm 34) who died at 25 years old. He was engaged to another friend and they had a baby on the way. Baby on the way, wedding date. He was driving home in the middle of the night. Tired.
He fell asleep at the wheel and veered off road, hitting a tree. No one else got hurt but he died instantly. He never got to see his son. :'(

This is making me want to cry.

Edit: My friend Matt was a wonderful guy to. Always willing to lend an ear to listen, always giving hugs, and funny as hell. He could joke around or be serious and caring. He was excited to be a father.

Sorry to make it sad. I'm always scared when someone I know is driving while tired. Hell, I haven't driven in years but I used to drive and i've driven tired before. It's so normal.

These stories are important and highlight just one of the ways napping could make our world a better place.

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) Definitely.

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) I finished! I actually got really tired in the middle of listening to it (normal for me, I often feel bad I end up taking naps in the middle of the day) and had to pause it so I could take a nap lol. Staying awake was not an option. Once I woke up I finished listening to it. And hopefully this helps me not feel bad about taking a nap! Naps are necessary. This was very informative. :)

I think that's the best possible result the author could have hoped for! :)

Would either of you like to make a nomination for the next group read? It's that time again!
