I read it more than thirty years ago and still remember that it was scary.
This book got me completely off translations.
I read a news article when the Dutch translation came out. They had cut about half of it...
Right at the start little George has to go in the cellar to get some paraffin for a boat Bill is making for him.
In the original you get a whole description of his feelings and thoughts (more than one page) In the translation that was reduced to one sentence!
So from that time no more translations for me (except of course for Japanese or Italian... etc.)
41% through. Couldn’t resist starting this before my group read next month was so exited to read it so much is going on and I’m not even halfway yet, 10 unsolved cases (maybe more) and a killer clown on the loose

I didn't sleep well that night ;-)
