Monty loved the first third of Benjamin Labatut's When We Cease to Understand the World, but the blend of fact and fiction became a hindrance as the book progressed. "Were these real, or completely imagined? Wouldn't some of these historical figures be insulted by these passages?"

Obsidian | 156 comments But seriously I think the biggest fart noise I can think of in recent years is Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. First three books fire. And then there's whatever this latest mess has been. I want to scream throw in the towel at each new offering.

and yes, this too--I still think I liked this book on the whole quite a bit, but I liked the beginning shorter stories more than the later longer ones

I am already dreading whatever the last book is going to be. I will read it, and probably be pissy the whole time. Sigh.
