But it turns out not to be so random after all. And supernatural isn't really the right world for what is going on in this novel--though I'd be hard pressed to come up with a better word. It has much more of a dystopian and futuristic bent than I had realized, both of which almost always appeal to me. The violence in the story is definitely there, but it's not all laid out in horribly gory details, and it's interesting to follow along with the mystery of why these things are occurring.
The narrator, Hesketh, is a wonderfully loveable quirky guy with Asperger's, which seems to be all the rage novels these days. While it has occasionally caused problems in his personal relationships, he does not lack in feelings for his ex and her son. It also leads him to be singularly great at his job, which involves detecting patterns across various criminal instances.
It's pretty much impossible to describe this novel without giving away the ending... so you'll just have to trust me and read it yourself!
