Annerlee The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is set in Sweden (and translated from Swedish - so could be used for two categories.

I really enjoyed the tale of Allan Karlsson's mad journey and enjoyed the flashbacks which explained his character and the reason for his climbing out of the window in the first place.

I started the book with the normal pre-conceptions about old people who wander off in their slippers and get lost in the big wide world - but Karlsson is so much more interesting than that - he's lived for 100 years after all.

Would recommend this one!

Mary I liked this one too. I don't like depressing books, and found this on a list of non-depressing literary fiction books - and it was right on that!
