I just started reading this for maybe the fourth time... but it's been years, and the first thing that came to mind as I thought about reading was... WIREMAN... one of King's very best characters. I liked the slow build-up. After reading too many novels that just crashed into the story without any character development at all I was impressed with King's opening.

i agree.

I really found myself being won over by my personal connections with the characters in this one, which helped me ignore some of the complaints I had from a plotting perspective.
Also, you may want to finish your reading before reading my review, so it doesn't spoil anything for you.
Here' s to great reading and see you next month for King's next book - another short story collection, "Just After Sunset".
Best wishes,
Scott.

Once again, Scott, we're on the same page. I found this a book that non-King readers (like my wife) were simply amazed by... probably because the characters and their relationships overwhelmed the horror. The whole King-reading world agrees that Wireman is certainly one of his best characters and the family relationships (especially father-daughter) are the heart of the story. I didn't mind the slow build and ended up giving it 4 stars only because the villains didn't seem as strong as they could have been. Still, all in all, one of KIng's best later works.

Hi Nick, I certainly agree with your comments, especially the ones regarding the villains. We only see the Lady in Red like once in the whole book, which I struggled with. And yes, the key for me was that that the relationships overwhelmed the horror aspects.
Have a great weekend. I have already started Just After Sunset to get a head start on next month.

I really found myself bei..." Good review. I really enjoyed Duma Key as well, one of King's best 21st Century books, and Wiremen really is one of his all time best characters.

I really liked this book. The characters were lovable and/or relatable in some ways, the setting was different from most books I read and it was a nice change of scenery, I thought the pacing of the story was superb, and the (view spoiler)

I definitely will read this book again in the future, and was very glad it was the book for that month.

Long trips and pleasant stop-overs!

Exactly Steve. Thanks.

Agreed! Especially on Wireman, I'd love to have him as a best friend!
