This is groundbreaking science fiction published in the 1980s whose author introduced the terms cyberpunk and cyberspace. I appreciated it as a harbinger of many technological changes, but I found the story itself not particularly engaging. We find artificial intelligences, clones, and the matrix (a dream world intended to keep humans occupied – a parallel to today’s videogames, perhaps). It emphasizes action and cool technology over character development. I was surprised by the amount of gory violence, sex, and vulgarity (which exceeded my personal comfort level). I am generally a fan of science fiction, so I am glad to have read it even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as expected. I liked it enough to try another book by this author.
