NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11080 comments This unassuming small book feels very special to me. I don’t always find it easy to connect with characters in Japanese literature, but this book really moved me. It’s about a budding friendship between the male manager of a small eatery, and an old woman who makes the best sweet bean paste he ever tasted. Together they see the business rise and fall, and she manages to connect with some of their young female customers as well. They both have pasts to overcome, and gossip about her past causes problems for the business. There is a really interesting subject in the book involving the historical treatment of leprosy, aka Hansen’s disease. I grew to really care about these characters. If you’re looking for a short book for next month’s friendship tag, consider this one.
