With all this talk of whether the Bible is the literal word of God (which began in an odd assortment of posts in the Big Bang -Debunked? thread), I thought I'd bring up the subject of the Bible Code. For, in my opinion, if there is anything that was unchanged in the book, it very likely takes the form of a code.

For anyone who's not heard of the idea before, it's not as you may think an attempt to cash in on all those books ending Code that Dan Brown's novel inspired, but was a long held belief and tradition of the Jews.

From the first chapter of The Truth Behind The Bible Code:

“The...ancient and mysterious tradition among the Jews concerning the Torah -the first five books of the Bible, which form the core of Judaism, and are sacred to Christians and Muslims...claims that, unlike all other books of Scripture- and unlike any other sacred text...in the world, at any time- the Torah alone was not merely inspired, it was dictated directly by God to Moses in a precise letter by letter sequence.”

So, contrary to my post elsewhere where I was dismissive of the idea that the Bible was literal, we have here perhaps the reason as to the origins of why so many Christians still believe the Bible was the word of God. Perhaps, the literal 'word of god' is actually contained therein.

From the same source as above:

“(Some Jews) learned in Judaism and faithful to its tenets...maintain, to this day, that the legend of letter-by-letter transmission of the Torah was passed down by word of mouth for millenia, from the time of the actual event, precisely fifty days after the Exodus of Egypt. Only much later was the claim committed to writing.
...it is said that into the precise sequence of letters, there is encrypted information of a sort that only a divine hand could have placed there...

...The Torah (in Hebrew) has been preserved with an amazingly small number of letter-level variations. Though not 100 percent perfect, this precision of (historically oral) transmissions is of such a high order...that it has long been a puzzle to scholars.
...To this very day, every Torah scroll...in any synagogue the world over is copied by hand from its predecssor, written out according to unchanging rules, by scribes who undergo an exacting course of training and preparation. To each...the following warning has been passed down...: “Should you perchance omit or add one single letter from the Torah, you would thereby destroy all the universe.” In this light (some Biblical passages take on new significance): “I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the last stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law of Moses (the Torah) until everything is accomplished.” (Matthew 5:18, New International Version.)”

One of the most revered leaders and thinkers in Judaism was the eighteenth century Lithuanian rabbi, Elijah Solomon: the Great One of Vilna. He was a child prodigy and memorised every one of the Talmud's millions of words. He claimed, “All that was, is, and will be unto the end of time is included in the Torah...and not merely in a general sense, but including the details of every person individually, and the most minute details of everything that happened to him from the day of his birth until his death; likewise of every kind of animal and beast and living thing that exists, and of herbage, and of all that grows or is inert.”

Also from The Truth Behind The Bible Code:

"In the early ...twentieth century, another great Jewish mind appeared...Michael Ber Weissmandl (also a child prodigy)...stumbled upon a reference to the codes (by another sage) Rabbenu Bachya, who lived and died in the thirteenth century.... Weismandl...became convinced (that the code was) genuine (and would write out) the entire 304,805-letter sequence of the Torah on 10-by-10 grids.

...By the late 1980s, Isreali researchers had discovered encryptions that went far beyond what (the previous had discovered. The Israeli researchers found): references to...the revolt of the Maccabees...details of the storming of the Bastille...consequences and treatment of diabetes...even specifics of current history as it unfolded.”

The assassination of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt on October 6 1981 was apparently encoded in these hidden letter codes of the Torah. As were details about the Gulf War and the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the Isreali Prime Minister, in 1994.

The latter can be found in more detail in Michael Drosnin's best selling The Bible Code (unfortunately prophecies made in The Bible Code 2 never came to light, which presumably hindered the planned third book). From Drosnin's The Bible Code blurb:

“On September 1, 1994, I flew to Israel and met in Jerusalem with a close friend of...Rabin, the poet Chaim Guri. I gave him a letter which he immediately gave to the Prime Minister. (The letter said:) 'An Isreali mathematician has discovered a hidden code in the Bible that appears to reveal the details of events that took place thousands of years after the Bible was written. The reason I'm telling you about this is that the only time your full name – Yitzhak Rabin - is encoded in the Bible, the words 'assassin that will assassinate' cross your name.'
On November 4, 1995, came the awful confirmation (that Rabin had been assassinated.)

And, as I believe Edward mentioned elsewhere, I should have included the fact that Hebrew letters are interchangeable with numbers, and there could therefore be a mathematical code in the Torah.

Indeed I think we were duped from the offset, but simultaneously, ain't it amazing just how much truth we've also clung on to as well?

Well, people can barely remember the current fad or pop culture phenomenon. The Bible Code was a NYT bestseller in 1997, spending 17 weeks on the list. These "pop" religious books surface (sometimes existing) ideas, they have their day, and fade from most people's recollections.

Same with the Holy Blood, Holy Grail/Da Vinci Code genre, Judas Gospels, Q documents, Dead Sea Scrolls, Gnostic gospels, Mary Magdalene, etc.

If you're into the subject, you are probably aware of them, but if you are more focused on what is currently out there, they have faded into the background.

Yeah, Robert, it was massive just like all the other fads. (Pyramids' mystic properties in the '70s, hidden messages in water a couple of decades ago...)

Good time to return to this now I think, Harry.
What you imply here about there being a hidden bible code is most likely valid...Especially when you consider all the world's secret societies and ancient mystery schools coded things - a first visible layer of basic truths to conceal the invisible advanced knowledge. These camouflage techniques included using analogies, parables, anachronisms, metaphors and symbolism. The wise authors deliberately loaded their texts with multiple layers of interpretation...And to make matters more confusing, each interpretation was valid in its isolation (making many truth seekers assume they had found the ultimate truth and not look for other layers within these texts...). This ancient method of telling things in multiple layers and codes was even mentioned by the likes of the Jewish Philo Judaeus of Alexandria and the Catholics Eusebius and Augustine.

I believe we in the modern world have somehow lost the ability to understand documents or teachings from multiple levels. We want things immediately and usually only ever see the first obvious layer...We are not trained like the ancients to search for more layers behind the first one we discover...
