Cheryl (cherylllr) Piggybacking on last week's question:

Do you have any rituals or favorite settings or accessories to accompany reading sessions?

I read stories of ppl who 'settle in with a cup of tea' to read. Must be nice!

Pat of Rocks | 70 comments My "ritual" is lame. I re-read the last paragraph or two from where I left off to remind me what was happening...

Cheryl (cherylllr) That's important!

I need to be at least somewhat comfortable these days. In the past I could read anywhere anytime, but now I do my best reading in bed before sleep... always hoping I'm not so tired I fall asleep too readily.

I don't drink tea, have a cat, listen to music in the background, any of that. I wish I did though!

I've always used books a time filler between things, when I was finished with something early in class, or now at work during waiting times. I've brought them to the mechanic, to the doctor's office, or other places where I've had to wait. Sometimes my cell phone fills that space now, but if I remember, using that time to read feels more productive.

I don't need to be especially comfortable or pair my book with a snack. Sometimes that can be bad because if I'm too comfortable I fall asleep. I always have a book on the night stand and I might get through a few pages before I doze off.

Addie (addielr) | 23 comments My favorite "reading" session is actually listening to audiobooks. I like to settle in bed or a comfy sofa, with my noise-cancelling earbuds, and silky eyepatch ready for sleep. Then enjoy the mind-movie in my head while the story is being narrated.. so fun! Sometimes when I'm lucky, the scenes will carry out to my dreams and it'll be epic, colorful and with surround sounds. Cool!

Cheryl (cherylllr) Addie, that does sound very cool!

I have a poetry collection by Carl Sandburg for the dentist's waiting room, other places like that. Once I read a poem out loud to another woman waiting for her son, as we were talking. I don't know why my dentist was running so late but I'm glad he was, because it was a really fun chat, getting to know a bit of local history because she was a retired teacher and likes poetry, too.

I sit down at my desk with my comfortable chair.

I turn on my reading light and aim it just right.

I check to make sure I have my reading glasses on.

(I'm probably already smiling by now.)

I check the music player on my 2nd computer to select a soundtrack for this reading session. Adjust the volume.

Pick up the book, open the pages, re-adjust the light, select a section to begin reading.

About to re-read some of DUNE (hey, it's sorta Time Travel).

[sometimes coffee, sometimes tea, sometimes booze]

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments I don't have any rituals except when I read before sleeping I do get comfortable. You all are so organized. I will read my Kindle book while standing in line or have Siri read to me if I am doing dishes.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Good point, Alice! I appreciate that.
