Pat Cody | 160 comments The Couple at the Table (Spilling CID, #11) by Sophie Hannah Though the beginning and the end of this book moved along at a fair rate, I found it to have a sagging middle. Little of consequence happened; little of interest added to the original story question. I didn't find myself caring much about any of the characters, including those who appeared to be the main two who were intended to resolve the mystery of the killer's identity. Perhaps because no one seemed to care that the victim was dead, I didn't either; this reduced my interest in bringing them to justice. My lack of involvement in the story leads me to give this book a rating of 2 1/2.

I think it’s just the Prologue that’s deliberately in arresting sans serf type.

Though I’ve Lorien been annoyed with Harrah’s narrative trickery, I’m finding this one genuinely amusing.

Chris (chrissieml) | 152 comments Yes, after sorting that one out I have discovered that she is using different styles for certain aspects of the 'narrative'. (What's wrong with italics? Too conventional? )
Anyway, ploughing on, about half way through and realising why I wasn't overly impressed with the first Spilling CID book either. Yes, Ms Hannah takes a different approach to police procedurals, and does like her 'jumping around the time line' stuff. More when I've finished the darned thing.

Beth Stewart | 644 comments I am having troubles with this book
Have read first three chapters twice and it’s just not grabbing my interest

Chris (chrissieml) | 152 comments Finished and gave my usual two stars.
By the time we had had it all explained to us I was still going why? Yes, vague clues had been scattered through the book, but it still felt unsatisfactory.

Beth Stewart | 644 comments So glad to hear of your two star rating, Christina, as I am on the verge of packing this one in and shelving it as “abandoned”. I really don’t like the backward/forward format and Lucy’s ramblings are just getting tiresome
