I didn't think I could start in time, but I got the library notification today, yay!
For now nothing really big has happened, but it's fast paced and I like that. It reminds me to other SF novels, but more modern,if that makes sense?
Oh, and I love how the MC really cares about his roommate! That part was cute! ❤️
Hey! I planned on starting it and probably would've just moved that plan for tomorrow so that I can watch TV series now, but since you messaged I started it now. Yay.
*Well, this is going to be interesting for me. I don't think I'm going to like the MC's narration, I can't explain it but it's a tad chaotic, "try to be chill and funny" kind of writing and that irritates me.
(After finishing chapter 3, and not moving on because I'm feeling so sleepy, I have to say that I think I know what's up with the writing and me not liking it. The audio narration that I'm listening to sounds like I'm listening to a memoir, or some other non-fiction book, which is something that I usually avoid 😅)
* Chapter 2... well that lasted long 😐😅
* Murderbot is mentioned 😃 I love that, when characters from other things that I've read are mentioned. Have any of you read the Murderbot novellas?
*

I LOVE Murderbot!! I borrowed this a week ago and have been patiently waiting to start it only to end up out most of the day. Super excited to start tonight with the mention of Murderbot.

I'm reading on my Kindle but I agree that the style took a minute to adjust to from my last book which was historical with lovely writing and this is one is definitely trying to be modern and cool and in the perspective of a guy. I think it will be fun though.

Having only read 4 chapters of this one but I think if you like it, you will definitely enjoy Murderbot. Somewhat similar styles of wise cracking and sci-fi.
Hello everyone! A little late to the party, but I too have been excited for this one for some time now. I wholeheartedly agree with the writing style as well…definitely in the trying to hard category for me lol.
Other than that, it’s a little jarring for me to read about real life happenings in my fiction books 😂 I’m mostly a fantasy reader so reading about Covid and all that was a little weird to me. I also internally cringed at the amount of vaccines Jamie had waiting for him…does not sound like a fun time.
I’ve never heard of the Murderbot novellas, until now. Are they truly TBR worthy? 🤔

But, apart from that, I'm curious about the kaijus and their dependence on nuclear reactors (?????!!!???). And it's so light to read, so that's a plus for me!
I've never heard of Murderbot nor Snow Crash, but I will look out for them if I want to read some SF 🤔

So, I'm continuing today the 4th chapter I started and couldn't finish yesterday. I like how the Greenland they are visiting is actually green as it was before it all was covered in snow and ice.
I don't remember the synopsis but I know it sounded interesting, but yes, the narrator is just killing me too.
Part II of the comment 😂
Betsy and Kevin, love the normal names for kaijus
I finished chapter 12.. The world certainly is interesting, and the writing even though it's still bad... I'm warming up to it a bit.

Glad that the adjustment to the writing happens.
Up to chapter 8…not gonna lie the writing for me just isn’t it lol. It makes the book drag on more than I’d like. Other than that, I too enjoy the names the kaiju are given, but nothing else of note.

I still have problems identifying the newbies, and I don't think I will by the end of the book haha. I think Aparna is the biologist, Niamh is the physician and astrologist and the other one is the geologist? But I'm not sure. Too many names and jobs.

Picked it up to see the spoiler 😂
I have a thing where recurring things happen and I hate it.. so Jamie (is that the MC's name? Damn, I don't even remember his name) constantly saying his job is lifting things is starting to annoy me. The first 2-3 times it could've been funny, but more than that is just -.-
You are not alone in not knowing who is who 😂 I'm "yes!" for diversity, but also the names are not something I heard while learning English so they are not common for me, and that makes it a little hard to remember.

I finished today's chapters and I'm back at being annoyed with the writing, or maybe it's just the audio narrator whom I looked up because the voice sounded like something I already listened to... And I was right, I listened to a book narrated by the guy and it was non-fiction. Also the narrator is Wil Wheaton and for some reason he annoys me 😅 so that definitely doesn't help with me enjoying the narration.
How goes the reading for the other buddies?

Not as far into it as I'd like, just finished the venting kaiju scenario and Bella is currently nesting.
@Mina, I was wondering when I'd reach the Edward an Bella part based off your status! Definitely made me laugh a bunch.
@Jen, my money goes on Kahurangi (?). He just seems the most squeamish from what I've read lol

Chapter 20
(view spoiler)

I enjoyed the story and characters. It was a fun romp. The writing isn't amazing and the drama was fairly predictable but good fun.

Well, I'm not saying it isn't, and, even though the plot is sloooooooooooooow because it's mostly worldbuilding, I have to say I enjoyed the 25-27 chapters a lot. There was a lot of action, and I wanted to know more and more. Maybe it's because I think the world is fascinating, or I'm a fan of sci-fi, or I also believe this COULD be possible in our world.
Chapter 28
(view spoiler)
I'm gonna finish the book! And just comment as I go, and put all those comments in one comment .
* Happy Satie put Sanders in his place, and that even Jamie took him to the crabs to threaten him.
* Wow, where IS Bella? Okay, so things got more interesting now, finally intrigued by the book.
* Niamh and Kahurangy bickering is so fun. Love it.
* Fucking Sanders. Like how can you be such a fucking dick?!
Just wow. The chill he has for everyone dying, like oh great, that's perfect no one will know what really happened, everyone will be so confused haha. Just gaaaah -.-
* I'm just cringing at the exchanging EVERY bit of information with the enemy. How we knew about you attacking? Well a dead colleague hid a phone and we saw the recording, EVERYONE at the base knows, and as soon as we have contact with the human earth we'll tell everyone.. Fingers crossed that you don't find a way and kill all of us and the Kaiju Earth people because we were fucking idiots to tell you that.
Okay so things turned out okay at the end.. I like that we have the story come full circle, Jamie was recruited while he was delivering food, and now he recruited someone with whom he has worked and is a good person while they are doing the same job as him in the beginning.
The humor was not fully my kind of humor, but it was fun so I'm not fully regretting reading it. Also reading it with someone is a big plus, haven't been participating in BRs for a while so that was fun. Thank you guys.
