ChaoticClock Foreign languages challenge

Each year, my only real challenge concerns the number of books I will read in foreign languages (i.e. anything but French):

English: 10 books

1. Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights (02/02/2023)
2. Emily Brontë, Frankenstein: The 1818 Text (17/02/2023)
3. Isaac Asimov, I, Robot (23/02/2023)
4. Ursula K. Le Guin, Earthsea: The First Four Books (14/03/2023) (I will feel free to see it as four books if I don’t meet my objectives by the end of the year)
5. Ernest Hemingway, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories (10/04/2023)
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

Dutch: 3 books

1. Gerard Reve, de avonden
2. Something by Hugo Claus
3.

I DNF’d de kabbalist by Geert Kimpen when I was about 200 pages in because I found it poorly written and amazingly tedious and I wasn’t ready to commit to the last 150 pages at the rhythm of 20 pages/hour.

German: this list is extremely ambitious. I haven’t read that much in German in six or seven years.

1. Hermann, Hesse, Perter Camenzind
2. (Robert Musil, Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß)
3. Hermann Hesse, Demian
4. (Hermann Hesse, Aus Indien. Aufzeichnungen von einer indischen Reise)
5. Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
6. Hermann Hesse, der Steppenwold
7. Hermann Hesse, Narziß und Goldmund
8. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre)
9. Hermann Hesse, Das Glasperlenspiel

Latin (bilingual) : (really optional, I won’t feel bad if I don’t make it) 1 book

1.

Ila | 710 comments Great challenge, Clocktrotter! You won't be disappointed by Siddhartha or Demian. All the best.

ChaoticClock Thank you Ila. I read Siddhartha six or seven years ago and it left a huge mark on me. I've wanted to reread it for at least two years, but I haven't read much in German these last few years so I kept postponing it.

I initiated a Hesse marathon Buddy Read to help me achieve my goal. Feel free to join us if you'd like to read his other works :)
