I think the other thing that saved him was the fact that the snake bit Rhys before it bit Matt. He probably didn't get a full dose of venom.

I agree with you both about the does being less because it had bitten Rhys first. That bite experience at the Northcott crime scene informed Bree to help make good decisions for Matt. Adrenalin makes that venom speed faster through the body’s system and Rhys never stood a chance after all that exertion.
All of this helped to save Matt.
We all watched venom being sucked out of people’s bodies on TV back in the day! Look at how long it’s taken to correct that stupid practice.
