message 2: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Only 5 unread for me this month. Open to any but already have the audio for "Money: a suicide note":

-Bells of Basel
-Fado Alexandrino
- Bridge of the Drina
-Money: a suicide note
- Tent of miracles

message 3: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I have read 21 of these which is more than my usual. I would most want to read Broad and Alien is the World. Of the books that Amanda has not read I would most want to read Tent of Miracles but I also have not read Money. I have read the others.

21 down with some of the excluded. I have some interesting ones on my TBR shelf:

Americanah (Adichie)
Fables (Aesop)
Money: A Suicide Note (Amis)
The Commandant (Anderson)

message 5: by Mette (new)

Mette (therealmette) Nice, quite a few that I've read but also many that are on my TBR.

I think I'll vote either Half of a Yellow Sun or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I've read 29 of these. The ones that I have access to and would like to read include;

Novel with Cocaine
Tent of Miracles
Gabriela, clove and Cinnamon

Diane Zwang | 1883 comments Mod
I have read many of these. I would like to read Arrow of God.

message 8: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments I could get behind Arrow of God. That would finish the trilogy for me.

message 9: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 25 and would like to sponsor The Bridge on the Drina because I bought it when in Belgrade last year.

message 10: by Rosemary (last edited May 17, 2023 03:18AM) (new)

Rosemary | 715 comments I've read 27. I have The Old Devils by Kingsley Amis and The Information by Martin Amis waiting, but happy to let those take their chance on my Takedown list.

I could go for Tent of Miracles or Arrow of God. I can get both from the library.

message 11: by Anne (new)

Anne Kimzey | 3 comments I’ve read 6 1/2. I’ll vote for the one I need to finish for my IRL book club: The White Tiger.

Diane Zwang | 1883 comments Mod
I am going to throw my points at Arrow of God and see what happens.

message 13: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Think I might split my votes between Tent of miracles and Money.

George P. | 725 comments Amanda wrote: "Think I might split my votes between Tent of miracles and Money."

I heard that Martin Amis just died from cancer at 73. I'll put a couple votes on Money and the rest on "Gabriela, Clove..." which is coming up soon on my to-read list ( I already read Tent of Miracles).
I've read 16 plus one of the excluded, so my usual third.

Patrick Robitaille | 1602 comments Mod
With the news of the death of Martin Amis, it's clear I will be putting my votes on Money.

message 16: by Kristel (last edited May 25, 2023 03:47AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
The winner of the popular vote was
Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe
Randomizer Chose The Green Hat by Michael Arlen

Thanks for voting. We had more people voting with surprising results.
Arrow of God 13
Tent of Miracles 9
Bridge on Drina 1
love & Shadows 1
Things Fall Apart 1
Money 13
GCC 3
Caged Bird Sings 1

So what will you be reading in July.

message 17: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I’m going to read both of these. I’d never heard of The Green Hat but it’s just £2.99 on Kindle in the UK so I’ll give it a go.

message 18: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments Well, I voted for Arrow of God so I will fit that in! I am intrigued by The Green Hat, and was just able to find it on amazon.ca for less than $2. I'm not sure I can fit it in to my reading 'schedule' for July..... we'll see.

message 19: by Diane (new)

Diane Zwang | 1883 comments Mod
I will definitely be reading Arrow of God. The Green Hat looks interesting but I will have to see if I can fit it in.

July starts our new quarterly read The World According to Garp so I will start that before the ramondizer read.

message 20: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read both of them so will find something from my random list in the unlikely scenario of having read the quarterly before the end of the month

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I have not read Arrow of God so will try to read that one. I read The Green Hat a while back and I remember really liking it.

message 22: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments Amanda or Pip and maybe Patrick: if you have read both of the July picks you can lead a buddy read for Bridge or Money if others are interested.
I would be.

message 23: by George P. (new)

George P. | 725 comments I'll read Arrow of God by Achebe. I can get it from a library here. I liked his Things Fall Apart a lot. I'll probably pass on The Green Hat as I'm trying to work in some women authors.

message 24: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I’m keen for Bridge

message 25: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 715 comments I hope to read them both - they're not very long and both in my local library system.

message 26: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Sounds good, Gail: I have read both and would be down to host a Money buddy read if folks are interested.

message 27: by Pippin (new)

Pippin | 10 comments Newbie question: so how does this work? there were excluded books listed at the top - because of length i guess? are they relegated to the long reads category? but other books on the list were already BOMs previously and they can be voted for and re-selected as a BOM? this seems odd, but i guess not everyone necessarily read a book back in 2012 or whatever. is that the logic?
thx, pippin

message 28: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I can get both The Bridge on the Drina and Money: A Suicide Note and July looks to be a good month for reading so I would be up for both.

message 29: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments Hello Pippin and welcome. Yes, there are people who joined the group and actually finished the list or finished as much of the list as they were interested in and moved on. There are people who have joined relatively recently. Therefore, as you surmised, the books come up again to be a possible BOTM. The long books are usually part of the annual or quarterly read. We are going through the very long books slowly and they are “assigned” by length for the annual read. We vote on the quarterly books at the end of the year. You can also ask for a Random list and Book will assign you 4 books for you to read at your own leisure. Every time you finish a book she will give you another. For the most part I find I have never even thought of reading the books on my Random list. You can read the rules for the Random list under that topic heading.
If a person has read both of the book for that BOTM they can host a buddy read and pick a different book from the list that they have not read. Anyone can then join them in that reading.
Hope this helps

Should be able to secure a copy of Arrow of God, much less probable for the Green Hat

message 32: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Alrighty, since there is interest, put me down for a Money buddy read.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I am so sorry. I did not check all the votes before announcing. Money actually tied with Arrow of God to win. We could have a run off of the two to see which one wins.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
After giving this consideration here is what we will do.
We will have Arrow of God as the botm
Money as the Buddy Read
Green Hat as Radomizer.

The reasoning behind this as if Money was the botm then I could do a buddy read of Arrow as I have read both selections. Amanda has read both selections. So if this okay with everyone we would not have to have a run off election? If you want the run off election let me know.

message 35: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments I think this is an elegant solution!

message 36: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I am good with the solution. Also, Pip has read both selections, can she do a buddy read of The Bridge on the Drina?

message 37: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Sounds like a great solution to me. And if Pip or someone else also wants to do Bridge on the Drina, I'd be in for reading it.

I love this solution Kristen thanks.

message 39: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I will be delighted to do a Buddy Read of Bridge on the Drina

message 40: by Pamela (last edited May 26, 2023 07:40AM) (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments Thanks Kristel this solution works for me (especially as I’ve just ordered Arrow of God) and I think I’ll probably join the Money buddy read too.

message 41: by George P. (last edited Jun 27, 2023 01:36PM) (new)

George P. | 725 comments Money: A Suicide Note is hard to get now- one of my libraries has one copy but with 3 readers in line for it now. Anyone have a copy they don't mind parting with?
So even though I put a couple votes on Money, I'll stick with just reading Arrow of God.
06/26 PS: I've finished Arrow of God, look forward to the discussion.

message 42: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I haven't done a Buddy Read before. Do I put together discussion questions as we do the the BOTM?

You could lead the discussion in any way you’d like, discussion questions work, there just has to be some kind of discussion going on. I think Diane will start you a discussion thread but you can also start your own.
