Mariana Andros is a group therapist with a practice in London. Within the past year she lost her beloved husband during a visit to Mariana's birth country of Greece when he drowned during a sudden storm. Mariana's days are now filled with sorrow for her loss and the needs of her patients. A phone call from her niece Zoe, a young woman raised by Mariana and her husband after the deaths of Zoe's parents, sends Mariana running to Cambridge where Zoe is a student. A young woman's body has been found in the woods and she was Zoe's best friend. Rumors and gossip point to the handsome Greek tragedies professor Edward Fosca. He is rarely seen without a group of fawning female students following in his wake. The girls are beautiful, well-to-do, and completely loyal to their favorite teacher. Collectively, they are known as 'The Maidens'. The murdered girl was a member of this group and when a second young Maiden's body is discovered, Fosca's guilt is certain in Mariana's eyes. She relentlessly follows any clue she can find to pin the deaths on the professor.
I'm not quite sure why I didn't care for this novel very much but the term 'overwrought' comes to mind. It is more a 2 star read for me but I give it the extra star for stumping me with the killer's identification.
