June Subdue the Shelf Roll Requests

I landed on #19, but as I had already read this book and the book at #18 for previous rolls, I read #17 Winter Counts. I have made a note of this on my tracking thread.

You did that perfectly! Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks, Anita. My last two rolls were 3, 1, so I think that means I get to choose someone else's next move.
I'm also going to use a special advantage I earned on 1/3/23 to move forward an extra two spaces as I've already read the book I landed on in this round, so I'll be moving forward 3 spaces in total. I'll make a note of this on my tracking thread.

I have a question in advance of a situation that is likely to come up soon. I thought I was being brilliant a couple weeks ago by putting in the first 6 or so slots books that I planned to read anyway for challenges in May. But here is what happened, I started on 3, then got a 4, no problem. Everything would have been fine if I kept going forward. Then Shake it up Sunday made me go back 3. That took me to #4, which I read for the other challenge, so I went to #3 but that's the last book I read here for STS. So I am on 2. If my next roll is a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, (all of which I have read), I assume I will need to go back to #1. Still fine, my own fault for trying to game the system. But after that, any number will take me to a book I've read. Would I then go back to the previous board? Here is what my Engineer track looks like.
1. Why They Marched
2. The Bookish Life of Nina Hill
Next roll 4
4. Lady Clementine - already read
5. The High King’s Golden Tongue - already read
6. Red Pottage - already read

Robin, I think that you would stay in slot 4 even though you would read the book in slot 2 as that is the closest unread book to your position that you have gone past. So you would be fine if you rolled a 4, 5 or 6. I think whatever number you roll, you would move forward that many spaces from slot 4, and even if you landed on a book you have already read, you would remain on that slot, but read the book in slot 1. I’m not sure if I’ve explained it that clearly, but that is my understanding of the rules.

Hannah, you're right! Here is the rule from the original post:
IF your game board is not 100 unique titles, and you happen to land on a title you've already read -- you may read the book one space behind you, but you do not move your space on the board. If you already have read the book one space behind you, you will continue to look at titles moving backward one space at a time until you hit a book you haven't read. You will read that book (and please denote it in the space where you landed). If you have read EVERY book on your board, there will be a process by which you supply new titles for the number of spaces remaining, and we will randomize those titles creating a new board for you going forward.
If I don't roll a 4, 5, or 6 after my current book, I will read the book on space 1, then I will roll again from space 4. If I again don't get 4, 5, or 6, (or a special roll), I will need to ask for a new plan!

On #1, got to move 2 spaces but I've read books #3 & #2.
Help!

Help!"
Huh, I was sure I was the only one strategic/clueless enough to end up here! I just added a sentence to my msg 13 that if I'm not lucky, the issue will still come up on an upcoming roll.

Rolls for 5/31:
Joi 2-1
I got a 2-1 roll, which is a special- You may use up to 3 of your participation points to move yourself ahead up to 3 spaces. (WOOT WOOT!)
This roll landed me on book #27
Just making sure- I read book 27, but then clarify to Mods (Anita - hi!!) I plan to use 3 particiaption points to bump myself to book 30.
So my next roll of would start from book #30- even though I didn't read book #30? (Example my next roll is a 6- I'd read 36)
Is this right?

I worry about getting the same. I landed and read #3. Next roll took me to #6 which I am reading. Shake it up Sunday moves me back to #3 which I read because been here before, so I will instead read #2. Now I will still have 3 unread books when I finally ask for my roll, but I can see myself getting boxed in if the randomizer is feeling mischievous.
It feels too early for swap use and as I am at beginning of Porter, no accumulated rewards.

Hi Joi!
So, with this roll you may use 1 or 2 or 3 participation points to move yourself ahead AND you would only read the book where you move yourself to. The point of this special roll is to let you move to a new space and read what is there.
So if you want to read #27 - - stay there and read it.
If you want to read a book up to 3 spaces in front of you, then move to #28 or #29 or #30, move to the one you want and spend the participation points.
Is this more clear? Thank you for checking!

I think I understand the situation . . .you stay on #3, but keep moving back books until you reach one that is unread.
If you have to look at the prior board to get to an unread book, that's fine.
Am I grasping your situation correctly?

Hannah is explaining the rule properly.
Basically, you keep yourself on the space where you landed, and just look back at each book until you find one behind you that you haven't yet read - - that will be what you read.
If you need to go to a prior board to find one, that's fine.

I'll make a note of this on my board, thanks!

Hannah, you will be moving Jen K

Tien, this happened to someone else early in the game, and the solution was to read one book AHEAD if you couldn't go back any farther. Either way, your next turn starts where you landed, not with the book you actually read.

I'm also going to use my Special Advantage
🃏 Your advantage is you may triple any roll you receive, immediately after you receive it. You decide when to use it

I would also like to use a previously saved advantage from the book I finished on 14/2/23 to roll an extra 2 dice. I've made a note on my board that I have used this advantage.

I would like to move Jen to her #52 Clark and Division. I've got this book on my TBR but I really don't know much about it, so it would be good to see what Jen thinks.

Wow - great use of your special advantage!

It is wonderful - enjoy!

That took me off the board. I'll post my new board and request a new roll tomorrow."
OM - great work and advantage use! 👏

If you roll:
1-1: The current leader must move back 3 spaces on their game board and read the book where they have landed next.
Any combination totaling 7: You move 7 spaces and stay on that space, but you may read the book you land on OR one book forward or one book back - - your choice.
6-6: Don't like the book you will land on? You may roll again.
3-1: You get to take pick someone's next move on the board. The admins will use random.org to decide who will be moved. You get to decide which book they must move to next on their game board - - backward or forward -- within a 15 book radius. So you can move your opponent up to 15 spaces back or up to 15 spaces forward to the book of your choosing. Should you be reluctant to move another player ,or if you do not respond to an administrator's request to designate the move, random.org will move the player - odd rolls will move the player backward and even rolls will move the player forward.
2-1: You may use up to 3 of your participation points to move yourself ahead up to 3 spaces.
6-5: You must read a book that's on someone else's board and NOT on your own before you may roll again. (extra note here: you may read the book you land on first and then read the other person's book, or vice-versa. So two books must be completed before you re-roll).
4-4: Receive 4 participation points for the next book you read/review.
2-3 Get an extra "swap" that you may use anytime during the game.
6-4 Earn a surprise advantage to use anytime during the game
