As we head into "summer reading" season, let's take a few moments to recommend our best reads from May. Which picks stood out for you?

I'm coming off of #BookADayMay, which is an annual reading challenge on the middle grade book blog I run with my daughter. That means I plowed through 31 books last month, including a highly enjoyable reread of the Spiderwick Chronicles and graphic novels like Grace Needs Space! and Garlic and the Vampire.

My top favorites were Utterly Dark and the Face of the Deep by Philip Reeve, which involves a family of watchers on a tiny island far to the west of England. (Trolls and sea witches and hidden lands!) The Thing About Luck by Cynthia Kadohata, which follows a Japanese-American family who support a crew of combine drivers for the summer wheat harvest. The Lion of Mars by Jennifer Holm, in which a group of kids must figure out how to save their little space station colony. And I also enjoyed Carl Hiaasen's Chomp, which manages to balance reality with the humorous side of reality tv.
