LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments I am already in love with this magic system! About halfway through chapter 1 and can't put it down

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments Galadriel is hilarious, and a total badass.

The concept of malificer's is really interesting - like a permanent takeover/drain of life-force every time you use darker magic. That's really interesting.

I'm also loving all the monsters lurking within the school. It reminds me of a mixture of Harry Potter and Dungeons and Dragons. A constantly moving castle with monsters all around trying to kill you. Orion gives off serious Paladin vibes, with Galadriel reminding me of a Tiefling.

Bujo_bellel (bujo_bellel) | 51 comments Ooh that sounds interesting! Can't wait to start it tonight!

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments %25 of the way through.

This still feels like if DnD was set in Hogwarts, but I just can't get enough of it. Jack terrified the hell out of me though - the darkness of his character was so well built that even though he wasn't on screen much, he truly felt like a boogie-man of the school.

As with the first section, the monsters and creatures are an absolute favourite of mine. Especially mimics! Always a good one to throw in the mix.

Bujo_bellel (bujo_bellel) | 51 comments I'm currently at Chapter 6, and I'm quite intrigued. Galadriel is a really interesting and badass character. Although it made me sad that she didn't have friends and when people actually sat with her, I could feel it when she felt like crying too.

Bujo_bellel (bujo_bellel) | 51 comments Yes, a malificer is rather interesting, I think it prevents more people from going that path, although clearly some people still go that way. The school is really intriguing and that you have to aware of your surrounding in case something comes at you sounds really tiring in my opinion but I guess these wizards don't get to rest. Unfortunately, I don't get the references, I don't play DnD and only read the first 2 books of Harry Potter :)

Bujo_bellel (bujo_bellel) | 51 comments Jack was terrifying and I'm glad that Orion charred him to death. Yes, I agree that his character was well built considering he didn't get much screen time, but he still scared the shit out of me. The monsters and creatures are really interesting, with the many different types and also good for Orion since he can kill them so easily. Clearly not good for Galadriel on the other hand.

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments The comment on good outweighing evil is quite interesting. I'm at Chapter 7 (not sure if you're there too) and I'm loving the introspection Galadriel is providing about her own actions. Exactly when do we say an evil action has provided enough good that it becomes acceptable? And how do we determine what power truly represents? Is Galadriel more dangerous just because she is more inclined to the spells of a Malificer, or is the way she uses the spells what should truly be judged?

This may be fantasy, but it's really thought provoking.

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments It is past 2 am for me, I have just binge read from chapter 5 to chapter 11 and I have sooo many feelings!

Galadriel makes me just want to give her a hug, every time she talks about how isolated and unwanted she has been made to feel her whole life. But, she is one bad-ass spellcaster! That maw-mouth was something else!

I'm really curious why - after spending so long honing her abilities - she is continually finding herself being jumped by smaller monsters now though. Is it a reminder that even though things seem to be improving for her socially, she still has to worry about the rest of the world? Or could she be becoming far too relaxed and is instead forgetting about the danger and opening herself up to being taken down.

The New York enclave makes me want to smack each of them upside the head. Especially with that stunt in the library. It is a great comment on mob mentality, class, and inherited power.

I so desperately want to run a DnD campaign through this school! It would be perfect.

Today is going to be busy, so I might be delayed finishing by 1 day . But for now, I am truly grateful to have the rest of the series, because I have a feeling I'm going to want to continue right away. Lol

Ooh didn't actually think that much when that line came but now that you say it, especially with the Hitler thing and how he thinks he's doing great things in his mind which El's mom says actually makes sense. Like if you decide you're doing something good then that's your definition of good but to other people, it might not mean the same and might actually seem evil. I really like that El is actively trying to stop her actions from being disastrous and trying her best to be a 'good' person.

OMG I did the same exact thing last night lol (although I think I did from chapter 6 to 10 haha). Woke up with a slight headache in the morning(did that to myself there).
It's really sad to hear how left out she feels, with everyone around her avoiding her and actively getting out of the way. I guess it's good that people actually stick to her for her and not just for a deal ( I mean they kinda are still but you get the point).
That maw-mouth was absolutely horrible. I would be very concerned for her if she hadn't reacted the way she had. Although I would say that she was really smart and figured out a way to survive the school and now she knows the school really well.
I think the reason why she keeps getting jumped by smaller mals are because of the fact that she doesn't have that much power in a sense. I think the mals can actually detect whether someone has many people. Also I think that they might think she would be an easy target because she's alone a lot of the time. Or the mals are just stupid enough to go for her? Not entirely sure but that's what I'm getting so far. Although it could also be because she's actively trying to stop herself from getting evil and the mals might think she's vulnerable because of that?
I think Magnus is an ass and I think that he should really stop existing. Chloe isn't that bad but she still has that attitude which I don't think Galadriel humbling her many times would change honestly. I can't believe she thought that Galadriel would sympathise with her. Clearly, rich people problems.

Bujo_bellel (bujo_bellel) | 51 comments I really like Galadriel's personality. Like she's really sarcastic and her thoughts are very amusing to me. Reminds me of someone I know haha. I like that she is starting to understand why Orion sticks to her so much, although I think that she should probably be a bit nicer to him tho. I think I would be able to finish tonight but if I decide to value sleep ( which I really should) then I might have to finish tmr :)

Bujo_bellel (bujo_bellel) | 51 comments Okay I finished until half of the last chapter yesterday before going to sleep at almost 2 am... And continued this morning. Finished the book and what can I say, it was really enjoyable. I am really intrigued about the ending and why Galdriel's mother asks her to stay away from Orion Lake? But like her mother's warning was too late as they're currently not-dating.. I think Orion is a pretty good guy too, so I wonder why her mother thought that he should be avoided? I am very tempted to start the next book right away now but I also have other books to read for the prompts(maybe I would be able to start if the next book fits other prompts, will try :))
