This is the discussion thread for the last part of Part I. This read goes from March 25th-April 8th.

Nina (ninakins) | 10 comments This section is far more accessible than the first section was, in my opinion, though most of the Walpurgisnacht stuff still baffles me. Apparently, a lot of it consists of inside jokes that made more sense to people in Goethe's time. Poor Gretchen, though.

Pat Gerber-Relf | 9 comments I didn't realise there was a discussion on this. I read the book a couple of weeks ago in original German (am english but live in german speaking Switzerland since 48 years). Anyhow I understood it all. Was astonished to find that Mephistotoles appeared as a so-called "Pudel", although seems at the time of writing this was an alternative word for dog. I thought a hell hound would have been more appropriate. Walpurgisnacht is all with the German underworld to do but it fitted. I am not an expert and actually read it because I felt something was missing in my works of literature. I think it should be read perhaps 2 or 3 times to get the real gist of the whole thing. It seemed to me that they all died at the end, the goodies going up and the baddies going down, although apparently Faust still had a survival chance somewhere along the line. Must do a re-read.
