Rachel N. | 2237 comments Mia Tang's family has bought the hotel they run, The Calivista. Mia is starting the 6th grade and is in the same class as her best friend Lupe. Proposition 187, which would not allow the children of undocumented residents to attend school, is on the ballot. This was a real proposition during the 1994 election in California. Lupe soon admits to Mia that her parents are undocumented. The book hits on a lot of issues regarding immigration that are still relevant today. The book is aimed at kids and I do wonder how much some parts would resonate with them, such as creating a letter writing campaign. Today most requests to congresspeople is electronic. Overall I think the book takes a good approach to teaching kids about immigration issues. I also like the three main characters.
