I've seriously been considering starting a YouTube channel dedicated to reviewing books in a similar style to what Common Sense Media does for movies. I (and I think my 20 yr-old son might want to help) would do a review and then have a ranking system to represent how much violence, language, sex, etc. is in a book. I'm really tired of investing in a book (audiobooks are 99% of my fiction reading) and having to put it away because of the content that no one warned me about.
Currently, the only YT channels I can find are by moms and their preteen daughters who only do Christian fiction. Although there is definitely a need for that, my family is looking for something a little different than that, me in particular because I'm an author (I've written several non-fiction, religious books but want to become a "clean" voice in the epic fantasy genre) and need to be familiar with a broad range of writing style, but don't want to have to wade through the muck to get there. If a book gets too graphic, it simply goes into the DNF pile for me.
My late-teen and adult sons and I do a lot of read alongs together and I think there are other families who might want recommendations on what's appropriate for their family and what isn't. I want to help people make educated choices when it comes to fiction, particularly fantasy and science fiction (although not exclusively). What may be appropriate for your family may not be for mine, etc., so having a content rating system might be the best thing to help people make their own choices.
How much interest is there out there for something like this? I already have another YouTube channel that is doing pretty well, so I could definitely make it professional, rather than just a camera and a talking head. Just checking on the interest level. Thanks for listening (reading). :) Please let me know if this is something you would like to see come to life.
Yes, this would be fabulous, since I'm always looking for books that meet my criteria. One is no sex scenes--even if there is some it's all left to the imagination. No graphic violence. Little to no swearing and if there is any, is it only a little. Also, is the book dark. Just because it's "clean" doesn't mean it's not dark or heavy or depressing.
What a great idea. I agree with Karin and the parameters she has used 100%. To expand on the "dark", for me, the blackness is pure evil or just so strange it plays with your head - that is a DNF for me. If I feel embarrassed or weird just reading alone with my hot tea and the dog, then the book just isn't for me. I'm not perfect, but I try very hard to select clean books, and very often am blindsided with a chapter or act that for the mainstream reader is condoned so not included in the reviews. Long story short, yes, this is a great concept Darren!
