Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion - 2* - My Review

Set in the sixties and early seventies, this book tells the story of Maria Wyeth, an second rate Hollywood movie actress who marries, engages in affairs, divorces, drinks, and feels increasingly depressed, empty, and hopeless. I think the writing is fine, but I did not enjoy this book. It is a book of misery and increasing mental instability. Luckily, it is short. I have just started reading Joan Didion’s works. So far, I've only read two, but I much prefer The Year of Magical Thinking.
