Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Even with the reduced list, there is thankfully 3 I haven't read:

-Stone junction
-Fool's Gold
- The Bitter Glass

I will be voting for one of these, but I don't think any are on audio for folks that want to use audible credits this month.

message 3: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments I don't have a strong feeling about any of the choices. Stone Junction sounds like a book I would enjoy, but doesn't look accessible unless I can get it through ILLO.

It is free on open library, if you ever read ebooks.

message 5: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 21, including the excluded. I am going to vote for Play it as it Lays as it is an actual book on my shelf.

Oh, ok! Thanks - I will look there.

message 7: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I have read 10 of these and wouldn’t mind reading another Dickens. I have read Play it as it Lays but none of the three on Amanda’s list.

All in all, I have read 24 of them. There are only two on my TBR shelf:

Play it as it lays (Didion)
Manhattan Transfer (Dos Passos)

If we go the Dickens way, Oliver Twist would be my choice (the only other one I haven't read is David Copperfield, but it's not eligible).

message 9: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments Thanks to Dickens being there, I’ve read 11 of these (and 7 of the excluded) I’d quite like to read some EL Doctorow.

Of Amanda’s list, I’ve read The Bitter Glass but not the other two.

I’ve read all of the Dickens. I’ve read all of the Dostoevsky except Devils (Demons) which is not eligible. I’ve read 19, I would be up for reading The Book of Daniel by Doctorow because it is on my shelf.

So my choices would be
The Book of Daniel
Berlin Alexanderplatz and
Manhattan Transfer

message 11: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I have the Book of Daniel too so I think I’ll vote for that

I am willing to allow Oliver Twist as it is only 608 pages long.

Great!

message 14: by Rosemary (last edited Jul 17, 2023 01:51PM) (new)

Rosemary | 713 comments I've read 11, including Oliver Twist, Play It As It Lays, and Manhattan Transfer.

I haven't read Stone Junction or The Book of Daniel. Our library has them both.

I think the only one I own is The Nun by Diderot in French. September would be a good month for me to read my slow way through that, because I will have some time off work. But it doesn't sound like it would get any other votes.

message 15: by Pippin (new)

Pippin | 10 comments This is interesting - I had a notion to re-read Out of Africa this year along with some other Africa based classics (Wind, Sand, and Stars & West with the Night) as well as re-reading Great Expectations (prompted by reading Francine Prose's chapter on it in What to Read and Why.) I read GE in college after a tough breakup and it just lined up precisely with what I was going through, so I thought it would be interesting to read again, decades later, after the wounds have healed. (Kristel you have it as excluded but then list it with the Dickens options. ??) So I would be okay with either Out of Africa or GE even though they would be re-reads. Of the others, I'm most interested in Berlin Alexanderplatz or Ragtime - really any of Doctorow since I haven't read him yet...
I've read 8 - several of them earlier this year.

I think you caught a mistake that I made. It should not have been included. You will have only one vote unless you start keeping track in the Annual Points Challenge. You used your 5 pts for intro last month. Thanks I will correct the list.

George P. | 725 comments I have read 7 or 8 of these. Radiant Way, Hard Times & Berlin Alexanderplatz are on my to-read list and Book of Daniel interests me also. I may vote for Book of Daniel cause it's shortest. I just finished a couple of long books and don't want to read any more long ones for a while.

message 18: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments I ended up voting for Stone Junction.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
The winners are;
Randomizer Manhattan Transfer
Popular Vote: The Book of Daniel

Voting was slow but in the end a fair turn out.
Book of Daniel 12
Play it as it Lays 3
Stone Junction 8
Manhattan Transfer 1
Berlin Alexandraplatz 1

What will you be reading in September?

message 20: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I’ll definitely be reading The Book of Daniel. I’m quite curious about Manhattan Transfer but I’ll wait to see how many other books I commit to in September

message 21: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Hope people enjoy The Book of Daniel (I thought it was incredible). Manhatten Transfer was pretty good too. Unless anyone is interested in a Stone Junction buddy read, I'll chill a bit in September :)

message 22: by Rosemary (last edited Jul 26, 2023 11:54AM) (new)

Rosemary | 713 comments I will read The Book of Daniel and also take Diderot - La Religieuse to read when I go away.

message 23: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I will aim to read both of these.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I hope to read both too.

message 25: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments Both the chosen books are on Audible, Manhattan Transfer for free, so I am happy. I have used up one credit.

message 26: by George P. (last edited Aug 11, 2023 02:32PM) (new)

George P. | 725 comments I’ll be reading The Book of Daniel also. I'm thrilled that a book I voted for won the poll. Years ago I read three other of Doctorow's novels, so I enjoy his writing.
I have been cutting back on books by American men, but will go for this one.
I read Manhattan Transfer (long ago) and it's kind of long so won't join for that one.
I have a library account that has a 2 week wait for the audiobook of Book of Daniel, so I put a hold on it- that should be good.
Update Aug 9: I have started Book of Daniel.

I should be able to read both. Second month in a row that the randomiser hits my TBR shelf (and I'm the fool who voted for Manhattan Transfer!).

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I have ordered both from the library :)
