Hi, everyone!

For anyone unfamiliar, this is a monthly challenge where you post a link to a shelf you created. It can be named "PIFM" or "Pick It For Me" etc, if you want one dedicated only to this challenge, or you can use an existing shelf you already have, as long as it has 100 or fewer books on it. The link must be to the specific shelf, or you will not be partnered.. Indicate how many books you would like to have picked for you from that shelf for the month in question. There is no lower limit as to how many books you can have on your shelf, but, of course, they should be books you are interested in reading during the next month and have ready access to.

On or about the 25th of each month, I will post who picks for whom. In order to accommodate an uneven number of participants, pairs will not be reciprocal -- in other words, it won't be Joanne picking for Jennifer and Jennifer picking for Joanne. It may be Joanne picks for Jennifer, Jennifer picks for Herman, and Herman picks for Suzanne, and someone else entirely picks for Joanne.

IF anyone has not been "picked for" by the 30th, I will pick for them if the designated picker can't be contacted by PM.

When you are assigned someone to pick for, note the number of books in parentheses after that person's name in the pick list, go to the link for their shelf, and pick that number of books for them. Post the books in a new message here. That person has the entire following month to read his/her picks. Someone will be picking for you the same way. We all like to see what people think about their picks, so we hope you will keep us posted in this thread!

Example: "In for five, please!
PIFM"

The HTML template for linking your shelf can be found HERE and if you have trouble, PM me and I will help you.

Your designated shelf must be set so that others can see it. To set up a PIFM shelf for those who would like to, go to the "MY BOOKS" link in the GOODREADS toolbar, scroll down below your shelves on the left until you see the "add shelf" button, and click that. Name it PIFM or Pick It For Me. Add books to it, and post the link to it in this challenge as described above. Again, if you need help, please don't hesitate to PM me!

If you are in for August, post your shelf and the number of picks you'd like to have below. See you on picking day!

August Pairs:
Jennifer picks 4 for Lance
Joy picks 5 for Jennifer
Lance picks 2 for Denise
Jackie picks 3 for Joy
Denise picks 1 for Jackie

Lance, I always like looking through your shelf.

Once a Giant A Story of Victory, Tragedy, and Life After Football by Gary Myers (and I'm sticking it on a list to buy for my nephew -- funny story, when he and my niece were expecting their daughter, I told him I was sure she'd be a Mets, Nets, and Jets fan. Outraged, he shouted "MY CHILD WILL NOT ROOT FOR ANY SECOND-RATE FRANCHISES!")

Lexington The Extraordinary Life and Turbulent Times of America's Legendary Racehorse by Kim Wickens

Speed Queens A Secret History of Women in Motorsport by Rachel Harris-Gardiner

Wrath of the Dragon The Real Fights of Bruce Lee by John Little

Lance (sportsbookguy) | 398 comments Denise I am picking for you:

The Invisible Hour The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman and

The Stepford Wives The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin

Joy D | 1289 comments Jennifer, I am picking these for the authors since I've read and liked at least one of their books:
The Spectacular by Fiona Davis
Her Deadly Game by Robert Dugoni

These two because they sound interesting to me:
Uncommon Grounds The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World by Mark Pendergrast
The First Ladies by Marie Benedict

And this one because I think the title is clever:
Doom and Broom (Spellbound #2) by Annabel Chase

Thanks, Jennifer. If your nephew and niece are hockey fans, they won’t like me as it sounds like they would be Rangers fans and I’m an Islanders fan! And as for second rate franchises - when were Knicks relevant in the last 30 years or so?

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1812 comments Mod
All fair points and apparently they are Rangers fans.

You know as well as I do that relevance has little to do with emotional commitment to a team. I live in Gator country and even when they’re playing so badly that they get trounced by some unknown Louisiana directional school, the faithful still come out.

Excellent picks, and thank you for the push to read "uncommon grounds" -- I have one prompt left in one of my challenges and it's about a coffee or tea farm, and I've been sitting on this book for it for months now.

Thanks, Denise. Now to find the book!!!

We are redoing all of the floors downstairs and all furniture will be moved by the flooring company; however, everything needed to be emptied first. That means that ALL the downstairs bookcases. I have boxes of books so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Here are the 3 books I chose for you. I have not read any of your books, but these seem good. Plus they are all a single word title which may help with another challenge.

Maame A Today Show Read With Jenna Book Club Pick by Jessica George Kindred by Octavia E. Butler Bournville by Jonathan Coe

Lance (sportsbookguy) | 398 comments By the end of the night, I’ll have finished two of my four. First one was Once a Giant: A Story of Victory, Tragedy, and Life After Football - enjoyed it. Here’s my review: http://sportsbookguy.blogspot.com/202...

Second one that I’ll finish tonight is Speed Queens: A Secret History of Women in Motorsport. “Secret History” is right - had no idea women were auto racing drivers in early 20th century France - just for starters. Will post my review after I write it tomorrow

OK, Denise, that edition's cover is just *creepy* and looks exactly right for it, too!

Lance (sportsbookguy) | 398 comments Finished #3 of my 4, Wrath of the Dragon: The Real Fights of Bruce Lee. Excellent book - if you like Bruce Lee movies you should read this. Here’s my review: http://sportsbookguy.blogspot.com/202...

Also realized I didn’t share my review of Speed Queens: http://sportsbookguy.blogspot.com/202...

For #4 it will probably not be finished until September- “Lexington” is over 400 pages!

Lance, the area I live in isn't Kentucky or Virginia but the county immediately south of me is renowned for horse-racing, and I've never heard of Lexington. I'm going to have to check it out.

message 32: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1103 comments Lance/Jennifer,

I am from Lexington, KY and I had never heard of Lexington (the horse) either until I read Geraldine Brooks book Horse. I was in Lexington in June and decided to go to the Kentucky Horse Park to view Lexington's skeleton. I have some photos but I don't know how to post them on Goodreads. He was truly an outstanding horse. I plan to read your book and I encourage you to read Horse as well.

Lance, Jackie texted me some photos re Lexington -- here they are!

message 34: by Lance (new)

Lance (sportsbookguy) | 398 comments The picture match the cover’s picture and as for skeleton: WOW!

message 35: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1103 comments If you look closely at the first photo you can see that the bone under the eye is larger on one side than on the other. That was mentioned in the book. It was amazing to view and I continue to be in awe that a creature that big can run as hard as they do on those thin legs!

message 36: by Joy D (last edited Aug 31, 2023 08:25AM) (new)

Joy D | 1289 comments Those are awesome photos! I've also read and can recommend the book Horse by Geraldine Brooks, which features Lexington.

Finished book 3 of 3 for August:
Bournville by Jonathan Coe - 4* - My Review

Another great month of reading. Thanks, Jackie!

Jackie | 1103 comments I'm glad you enjoyed the photos and the book, Joy.
