Chapter One starts with “A polar bear did him in. The biggest damned polar bear anyone had ever seen in or around Prudhoe Bay in the last twenty-five years, or so it was reported. Arrogance got him killed, though, and if William Emmett Harrington hadn’t been such a narcissist, he might still be alive. But he was a narcissist, and he was also a braggart.” Share your thoughts about this unique opening and the direction you thought the story was headed.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I was suspicious that a polar bear actually killed the braggart.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments Me too, Charlene. I thought leaving him for the bears to eat may be a good way to get rid of a body.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments Not knowing who this person was and how he ended up in Alaska to be eaten by the polar bear was a hook that got me reading. First the scientists log then this unique opening to the first chapter seemed a little dislocated to me and I had no idea where it was going from there.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments Funny, if I hadn't recently watched a news report about the crazy people at various National Parks thinking animals were their friends, I may have read more into this paragraph.

My first thought was William Emmett Harrington was TSTL. It got me reading because I thought he was one of the scientists who believed he was the next Jane Goodall, and the bear didn't let him get away with getting too close.

Jessica | 156 comments Barry should have been named Beary.

Sorry but that had to be said. HAHA!

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments Later in the book we learn that they were giving Harrington injections. Could what they were giving him made him make him smell different and attract the bear?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments Interesting thought Anita. I wouldn't put it past them.
