Feel free to post any background information or resource links which you think will enhance our enjoyment of the novel The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope.

I will post a schedule soon. There are exactly 100 chapters of similar length. (It’s a chunkster!) Since we have 10 weeks between mid-August and the end of October, expect the schedule to reflect 10 chapters per week. :).

Trev | 611 comments For those who have copy of the novel which does not contain illustrations, the Victorian Web has reproduced the whole set that were drawn by Lionel Grimston Fawkes in 1874/75.

Here is the link……

From Wikipedia…
“The novel is Trollope's longest, comprising 100 chapters, and is particularly rich in sub-plot. It was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s; Trollope had just returned to England from abroad, and was appalled by the greed and dishonesty those scandals exposed. This novel was his rebuke. It dramatised how such greed and dishonesty pervaded the commercial, political, moral, and intellectual life of that era.”

Be cautious with the Wikipedia article. It reveals major spoilers early on, which you may prefer to avoid.

Denise (drbetteridge) | 19 comments I'm so excited about this! I found The Way We Live Now on Audible, read by Timothy West. It is one of the free Audible Plus selections if you are a member.

I’ve started listening to the Timothy West audio performance. Right from the first chapter, I’m awash in why I love Trollope so much. Man, that man could write!

Denise (drbetteridge) | 19 comments Yes! I have already listened to the first 12 chapters. So far so good.

Trev | 611 comments There is a BBC adaptation (by AndrewDavies) from 2001 starring David Suchet as August Melmotte, Cheryl Campbell as Lady Carbury, Matthew MacFadyen as Sir Felix, and (amazingly) Cillian Murphy as Paul Montague.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300879/

It is also available on You Tube but it has been blocked in some countries so I can’t vouch for its quality.

what's amazing about this casting? (I've watched the miniseries once)

Cillian Murphy’s most famous recent role is Tommy from ‘Peaky Blinders’ (head of a gangster family with violent tendencies).

So it is hard to think of him as Paul. It just shows what a versatile actor Cillian Murphy is.

Just a heads-up for those who are choosing to join this read…

I’ve suddenly got a lot going on in my personal life, which means less time for reading and posting. I will really try not to get behind!

But will probably err on the side of posting the thread for the week a bit early. Please do not take this with a sense of urgency. Take your time and enjoy the novel. So far I find myself moving quickly through the pages, as the writing is clean and incisive.

As always the threads will remain open after the “completion” date, so feel free to continue to post as you make your way through the text.

Please be aware that Week 7 will likely be posted a bit late. I haven’t had the chance to read this section yet, and will be away for the weekend. I will try to post as soon as possible.

Okay, I’m back on schedule and will be posting Week 8 within a few hours. For those who are catching up… there will be a period before the November Read devoted to /catching up, switching gears, and discussing the film adaption for those who are interested.
