Interesting question. I never thought of there being any bad ramifications of withdrawing requests. I have withdrawn requests the day after I requested the books. I like being able to do that, plus not seeing a book on my request list for months and months.

Can you tell me more about "rejection/approval stats?" Do publishers see it for your account overall or for your requests for the books published by their imprint?
There's a publisher who is notorious for not approving many people. I put in anyway. Should I just not bother?

But I don't think it hurts to try. A publisher that doesn't approve many requests won't approve many requests regardless...and they definitely won't approve yours if you don't request!
I'm honestly not sure how useful that stat is to publishers. Seems to me that the feedback ratio and past reviews are far more useful in terms of telling them whether they can expect useful feedback from a reader. And I suspect that pickier publishers are picky based on things like audience size, not who else is approving a particular reader's requests.

They can easily see your overall review percentage, which is the main driving force for approvals. I strongly suspect that the publishers also have their own databases that let them know whether you are doing well with their titles. Way back when I first began using NG, I started a Word document that kept track of my approved titles according to publisher. It's probably not a coincidence that the publishers that send me endless widgets are the ones that I have faithfully reviewed for years.
And, ha, I just read Liralen's excellent post above this one, but since I've typed this, I will go ahead and post also.
