Hey Y’all!

It’s that time again!

August is around the corner so if you have a suggestion for the poll that would be great.

I look forward to hearing from you 🤓🤓

Karin | 627 comments There is a lot of sadness in my extended family right now, so I'd like to read something lighter such as a romance or something funny that isn't also a satire. I am not sure what to suggest, but did like In Search of a Prince In Search of a Prince (In Search of a Prince, #1) by Toni Shiloh , but it's Christian so I'm not sure if everyone is interested in that. I already have a few not-light books here that I may not get to or through, depending on how things go.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments What ever you all come up with, count me in! I had TOO MUCH FUN with Lyrics if a Blackbird to skip a month with this group ❤️

Karin | 627 comments I have another one by a black Canadian (as in born & raised) that deals with both culture and race when two people fall in love (both main characters came to Canada as children from different countries.) It's been mentioned on a number of Canadian book sites. It's a contemporary adult romance as well.

Three of the lists it showed up in are:
One of Betches’ 7 Books by Black Authors You Need to Read This Summer

One of Elite Daily’s Books Featuring Interracial Relationships You Should Read In 2020

One of Marie Claire’s 2020 Books You Should Add to Your Reading List

Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo Ties That Tether

I've heard good things about this one!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Just let me know what to get from the library , if possible. I am open.

I hadn't even known there was such a type of convention :) !I hope it's a good one.

Angel | 490 comments Regarding the Upper Room, is this the first book in the Mama Ruby series or is it Mama Ruby? I haven’t read them but they sound good and I have added them to my to be read list. But I would want to read them in order.

The upper room is book 1. Mama Ruby is book 2.

message 15: by Angel (new)

Angel | 490 comments I’ve ordered them. Not sure which one will be the selection but I think the Mama Ruby ones sound great.

I don’t know what to vote for. Lol

I have wanted to read the Mama Ruby series for a while. I own the Trust series too.

Honestly they all sound good.

message 17: by Angel (new)

Angel | 490 comments Hah! I’ve just ordered them all! Now who knows when I will actually get them all read!

Yes, The Upper Room is the first book in the series. It was released in 1985. Mama Ruby is the second and came out in 2011. There’s a third book called Lost Daughters (2013).

I read the synopsis of Mama Ruby, seems like it might be a prequel to The Upper Room.

If Upper Room is chosen, what do y’all think about finishing the series out over the next couple months??

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I would love to read the series. I read the God Don’t Like Ugly series by this author, it was hilarious

message 20: by Jazzmine (new)

Jazzmine | 12 comments I would definitely listen to the Upper Room again. If you plan to read , please listen to the audio version. It is one of the best/hilarious audiobooks I’ve listened to.

I’m ok with reading the series.

Could we see how we like it and then decide?) It's not my first choice, but sometimes I end up liking things better than expected.

Karin’s right. Lol! I WILL NOT commit to a series I don’t like. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes that’s so true!!

How about we revisit this idea at the end of the month??

If there are mixed reviews, we’ll do a poll with Mama Ruby added and see what book wins.

message 25: by Shaylah (new)

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
And the winner is …

The Upper Room by Mary Monroe

I’ll create the thread later today. I can’t wait to start discussing the book 🤓🤓

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Was anyone surprised about Rachel? Gem threw me for a loop. I thought Sweet was the only bad guy.

message 27: by Karin (last edited Aug 05, 2023 03:00PM) (new)

Karin | 627 comments I've put a hold on The Upper Room and suspended it until near the end of the month. My son and I are going to see my parents and then after 2 days at home I am helping him get all his stuff back to his apartment for grad school. (He lives at home all summer so he can work as a Merchandise Handler for a good company--the pay is better in this state plus they have a good work atmosphere--and we buy his groceries for the summer, although he's still paying his rent out there.)

message 28: by Angel (new)

Angel | 490 comments Dosha, I’m not there yet, (regarding Rachel in Blackbird), but I’ve been suspicious of her since the beginning when Sweet hired her to be Lilian’s nurse. Your comment is making me wonder if all my suspicions are true.
