It's that time again! Whether you're still in school or just love buying cheap notebooks, it's back to school season - this month we'll be reading comics set in/around school.

What did you pick for this Book of the Month? Any recommendations to share?

Tell us all about your picks in the thread below!

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 13 comments I recently read BLUE PERIOD about high school students in Japan discovering the wonder of art and art class. It's also a Netflix anime series . . . ..

Evilblacksheep | 85 comments I highly recommend Deadly Class, Volume 1: Reagan Youth that you used in the announcement message.

Sadly I'm up to date on that so I'll have to find something else. I think there is quite a lot of mangas which would fit the theme so I'm gonna check if I find one in my to-read pile.

Yes, I adore this series! I just read the 2nd and 3rd. Hands down the best OGNs about school that I've ever read.

The first two were very good. The third was more about a school trip than a poor kid at a rich junior high and I didn't think it was quite as good. But I get the desire to try something different with the 3rd iteration.

True, but the thrust of the story was still about how different the school trip experience was for the rich vs poor kids and how racism affected them. To me, the core themes felt the same, but you're right that it's a different feel since it's mostly not set at the school. I'm curious what the next one will be about (if there is another).

I've wondered if there will be more too now that they are entering high school and all separating into different schools.

I believe the author said this was the last one in the series sadly 🙁

Agent Shero (rayvenchoi) | 1 comments I wrote a chibi-styled martial arts manga, "Young Grandmaster Choi" about a little black girl starting school in South Korea. It's on Good Reads.

Evilblacksheep | 85 comments In a bit more of a dramatic tone... I remembered I have this one in my to-read list that I think would fit the theme:

Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story

Juan Motoa | 1 comments m going to check out the Manga SLAM DUNK for the first time. I’m excited for it!

I read this biography for our 2023 March theme. I can certainly recommend it, but my one major complaint was that the treatment felt a bit cursory; it struck me that the story would have greatly benefited by being longer.

I actually agree, I finished it in one sitting yesterday. I felt it was a really interesting read but i ended up with a taste of wanting to know MORE.

I ended up reading Clash and Making Friends for this month's theme. Both are middle grade OGNs, and honestly I wouldn't recommend either of them for adult readers. They were solid 3 star reads, but nothing special. I was particularly bummed about Clash, since the previous book in the Click series (Act) was great. I am planning to continue with the Click series, but not the Making Friends series.

Better late than never, right?! I finished up Boys Over Flowers: Hana Yori Dango, Vol. 1 last night - it was just ok! I would have been more into it, but there was so much weird dark sexual stuff (how do we level up from throwing an egg at somebody to attempted SA in like 3 pages??) in it that I doubt I will bother to continue with it.

I read it for another reading challenge for something published the year you were born, so I'll give it a little grace for being 31 (eek) years old!
