(view spoiler)[ The hammer attack occurs at the end of the first book. It was her aunt and not her mother. Father died when she was a child. Mother had issues. She grows up with her uncle and his wife. The uncle is oblivious to the abuse by the aunt. Girl keeps quiet about the abuse because she's protecting her young cousin(s). In the second book, she lives with her best friend's family and later moves in with her mom (either out of prison or rehab). Her mother's friend is the fire starter.
