From our August book group discussion, here are five tips for creating opportunities for critical conversations with our kids through children's literature:

Tip #1: Thoughtfully select texts that lend themselves to discussions about race, class, gender, power, etc. (Botelho & Rudman, 2009)

Tip #2: When you share texts with others, show that it’s okay to state the obvious. (Chambers, 1993)

Tip #3: No topic is more important than the people discussing the topic. Similarly, no book is more important than the people discussing the book. (Renlund, 2021)

Tip #4: We must reframe discomfort and the unknown as productive spaces in which we stretch, develop, and grow. (Ricks et al., 2023)

Tip #5: Those from majority cultures can and should advocate for those at the margins. However, they (we) must be careful not to tell others’ stories as if they are our own. (Adichie, 2009; Reese, 2022; Woodson, 2006)
