Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2594 comments Logan is happily married and has a daughter who beats him at chess all the time, even though he's the one who taught her! The time period is some time in the future, but not too far. However, it is after a cataclysmic period that is all the fault of Logan's scientist mother. She was a brilliant geneticist who was working to make the world better but ended up creating famine and many other environmental catastrophes that the world is still struggling to overcome. Logan actually spent time in prison because of this and his mother committed suicide. Logan was pardoned and currently works for a new agency, the GPA, much like the EPA but for genetics.

One day he goes on a raid with his partner and he is injured in an explosion. He starts to change, slightly at first, he thinks he has a strain of the flu but even after he's doing better, subtle changes keep happening. From this short beginning, the story explodes.

Typical of Crouch, there's a lot of science. It gets a bit bogged down when listing all the gene sequences which I wouldn't have even tried to read, but since I was listening, there was no avoiding it. I'm not a big science fan but it's easy to separate yourself from all of that science-speak and simply embrace the story. I did that with Project Hail Mary and other Andy Weir books. Upgrade is a wild ride and even somewhat believable if you simply accept it as with fantasy novels. The story went quickly for me in the audio and the narrator was very good.

I wouldn't mind going through gene modification for life extension. It is my believe that readers should be allowed this little privilege. Fifty or sixty years to read 15 to 20000 books at best... Such a shame. We need more time. :) :) :)
