Yes, I'm on chapter 2 (reading on my Kindle).

message 8: by Adrienne L (new)

Adrienne L Have you guys read other books by Kingfisher? If so, which was your favorite or what were your thoughts about the book(s) you read?

This is my 4th Kingfisher this year. I first read What Moves the Dead, then The Hollow Places, and finally A House with Good Bones. I enjoyed all of them, but The Hollow Places was my favorite. I love Kingfisher's quirky main characters and humor, and her depiction of animal companions.

message 9: by Juli (new)

Juli | 107 comments @Adriennelee I could hit myself in the head! I do have chapters but didn’t see them because I was so into the story hahaha! That’s never happened to me before!

Also, I have read The Hollow Places and The House with Good Bones and I loved both. I did like The House with Good Bones a bit more. I’ll post later what I thought of it with spoiler tags. I’m on the Goodreads app right now and it won’t allow me to use spoiler tags so later I’ll hop on my laptop. What Moves the Dead is also on my TBR and I’m looking forward to it! T. Kingfisher is one of my favorite authors at the moment.

I’ve read those too. I would rank them as
1. Twisted ones
2. Hollow places
3. House with good bones
4. What moves the dead.

I also read one of her fantasy books but I can’t remember what it’s called. It was good, I just can’t remember the name of it. And mind you, I haven’t came across a dud yet. All of her books are good, just some better than the others. At least I think so.

I've read all of her books: THE HOLLOW PLACES was my favorite so far, followed by A HOUSE WITH GOOD BONES.

@Latasha: I loved NETTLE AND BONE!

yeah it was good. The reason this one is my favorite is because of who & why. i love it!

message 14: by Jari (new)

Jari | 5 comments I've read The Hollow Places too, back in 2020! I liked it, but my rating might have been a bit biased by the fact it was recommended to me as something similar to House of Leaves, and it ended up being underwhelming in comparation (which was not fair to Kingfisher, I guess. It's a good book on its own!)

And also read Paladin's Hope, which I LOVED so much, both for the LGBT's perspective as for the world building in general! I really hope she keeps this series going, and considering she seems to be such a prolific writer, who knows, maybe next year I'm lucky.

I'm definitively adding both A House With Good Bones and What Moves The Dead to my reading list, if The Twiested Ones turns out to be as good as it already is at 20%!

She has a lot of book on the fantasy genre, are you guys interested in those too?

I need to reread THE TWISTED ONES. I have a feeling it will be like WYLDING HALL is for me (Elizabeth Hand), where I pick up more of the folklore on subsequent reads!

message 19: by Juli (new)

Juli | 107 comments So I have read the first three chapters of The Twisted Ones and I got so immersed already!

I like the story so far, it is well written and I like the pace. I'm really curious as to what's going on.

(view spoiler)

I love that the main characters in T. Kingfisher books are genuinely funny and (view spoiler)

I've read 6 of her books. I rank them thusly:
The Hollow Places 4.5*
Thornhedge 4.5*
A House with Good Bones 4*
Nettle & Bone 4*
The Twisted Ones 3*
What Moves the Dead 2*

I've liked Kingfisher's books so much, I'm even tempted to try her fantasy novels, which isn't a genre I normally read. I'll keep Nettle and Bone in mind if I decide to do it.

That is a very odd comparison, those books are so different. I love House of Leaves, but I think the comparison ends at the fact that both novels have a mysterious and impossible hallway that opens up in the wall.

I don't really read fantasy. Although I liked Neverwhere and The Ocean at the End of the Lane is one of my very favorite books.

Yes, the relatability of her characters (physically and otherwise) is another great thing. I know the MC's read pretty similar to one another, but I enjoy them so much that I find it comforting. And in other books, more often than not, I find the MCs irritating. I love that her narrator's are sarcastic and smart.

I'm enjoying it so far! It seems like this one might get a bit creepy (view spoiler) And, as a dog owner, I'm loving the relationship with Bongo.

Seems like The Hollow Places is the favorite for a few of us.

And I debated about reading it because I thought The Twisted Ones started off decent enough, but wasn't crazy how the third act went down. Glad I gave it a chance because that was A+ cosmic horror, and hilariously funny.

OOH--You should join Latasha and I for our "annual or more" buddy read of Wylding Hall! We LOVE it!
And I can't wait for the new one, too--maybe we could set up a buddy read for that as well (it does release near the best holiday of the year).

destiny ♡ howling libraries (howlinglibraries) | 319 comments I'm just peeking in here because I love this book so much! I saw mentions of checking out her fantasy books and had to say that I read Swordheart a few months ago and it was honestly one of the funniest books I've ever read in my life. Yes, I feel the same way! I've read a few books now and in most of them I don't like the characters at all but I do like T. Kingfisher's MC's.

I also love the MC's interactions with Bongo.

It's hard to creep me out, so if this book succeeds at that it's immediately my favorite!

I haven't been able to read today as I had a busy day but tomorrow I'll read again. I'm really wondering what's gonna happen next!

Adrienne L @Destiny Thanks for another fantasy recommendation. Kingfisher is very funny, so you have certainly piqued my interest!
