Tr1sha | 336 comments Our longest challenge!

1 September - 19 November (80 days)
Read classic books or short stories where either the setting or the author is from a country where you don’t live. It would be good if the book includes a journey, but that isn’t essential. How many countries can you “visit” in 2 months?

For example, as I live in the UK I could read a book by John Steinbeck from USA. Nike is from Sweden & could read a book by Charles Dickens from UK. (Whatever books or stories you choose, read a version in the language you prefer.)

20 - 30 November
The journey has ended so there are a few days to read a short story or book set in the country where you live or by an author from that country.

As always, challenges are optional - even one short story is enough to participate. Have fun!

I have actually never ever read his books yet. Embarrassing, especially since I've always wanted to. Will this be the year when I at least begin? (Yes, it Must be).

Since he is born in South Africa I can use him for that country and chose another for England. That must be according to the rules, right?

Nike, I share your pain - that’s how I felt about it! It’s also why I finished it - if I’d taken a break from it I wouldn’t have started again. I just abandoned everything else & kept reading until, eventually, I reached the end. It’s a shame, it isn’t a bad book & could have been enjoyable if it had been edited a lot. As it is, I have no plans to attempt to read another book by the same author.

Aha, I only recognise Buster Keaton when he is old! I love that famous scene when he drops his toupé (haven't got a clue how that word is spelled in English, I mean the "mini wig") in his soup and one can see the faces of a couple in the mirror. But of course he must have been young once. Thank you 🙂

Yesterday when I glanced through your titles I discovered the title Martin Chuzzelwhit for the very first time, I've never heard that title or name before. And a few minutes ago I finished the first book out of Haruki Murakami's trilogy 1Q84 and this very title is mentioned in one of the last pages. I love when things like that happens.

Thank you for your comments, Pam. It’s interesting that you enjoyed having a longer challenge. Useful feedback as it will be something to consider doing again if others feel the same.
