Because of Patterson, Ellie’s parents feel forced to send her across the country to live with strangers with very little contact with family over the years. Were they right to isolate her from loved ones in this manner – especially at such a young age? Could they have done anything differently? How did the separation influence the rest of Ellie’s life?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments She was in danger and the only way to protect her was for her to disappear. It was a horrible decision for any parent to have to make and it could have very well have saved her life. The justice system didn't. The couple she lived with were wonderful people, but Ellie is one smart girl and even though she knew she wasn't at fault for what happened, in her heart she felt she was. The separation changed the dynamics for the whole family.

Jessica | 156 comments I can't think of anything they could have done differently. Anita said it all.

Perfectly worded, Anita! What a heartbreaking decision for all. I do believe it changed the course of her life and left her with some personal issues to work through later in life.
