NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11063 comments I planned to read this book for the Moral Dilemmas tag, which definitely fits. The main character grapples with several moral dilemmas and questions throughout the book. The book also has 187 literary fiction tags. The bulk of the story takes place in post World War II Germany. The novel begins with a 15 year old boy who gets sick on his way home from school. He is aided by a woman who kindly helps him home. After a long convalescence, his mother encourages him to thank her, and he brings her flowers. They eventually become lovers, despite the fact that she is twice his age, and it has a powerful effect on him. She loves for him to read to her, and they spend a lot of time together until she suddenly leaves town. He doesn’t see her again until years later when he is a law student, and she is in trial. He discovered that she had been a Nazi prison guard during the war. The story is thoughtfully told., and brings us many years in the future. The MC explores some of the moral and emotional issues in detail, but sidesteps others, This actually felt quite realistic to the situation.
