Starting this one tonight too. John, without giving away spoilers, can you tell us a little about how this story came about?

I just started this one and read the first half in one sitting!

This one started with the ending scene...fully formed, just plopping into my brain one day. I jotted it down and then had to figure out how to get to it...so I started typing...as with all of my work, there is a thick almost personal vein to the characters and SOME events.

As good a place to start as any. If you like it, you'd be okay with any of my stuff. I'm grateful you all are reading it. Thanks!

Good review, Kimberly. I appreciate that it was essentially spoiler-free as I'm just picking this up to read now.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments Just read a little bit this morning. Seriously impressed by the imagery created by the words. The prologue was a great tease. What a cool metaphor!
I read to Chapter 3, about 5% in. More fantastic imagery in the words of the main character. Almost a zinger per paragraph.
Can John Boden possibly keep that up? I'm excited to find out. First, I have to read a few chapters more, and then read the beginning over again. I feel that's important, and it's so good - why not?

Char | 17457 comments I hope you ended up enjoying this Michael! I, too, loved the imagery and I mentioned some of it in my review.

John, I absolutely adored the end of this book. That scene just popped into your mind, out of nowhere? lol

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments About 40% into this so far, and still haven't uncovered the main conflict - - unless it's the main character's internal goings-on. However, damn if the vivid imagery and word play hasn't let up one single bit. Notable sentences on every page, many of them. OMG.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments Wanted to read this slow and relish the writing but couldn’t help reading a large chunk at one time. now at 72%. I clearly see the conflict and have a good feeling where this is going. Sadly.

It did. My brain is weird sometimes.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments I finished. While I had a feeling how this would end, it did not lessen the impact. Nor did I guess at the particulars. How tragic.
And, that final scene at the "man-made" lake - - what a surprising ending! (and still tragic).

Yes, it felt as if it was personal to you. Well done.
